Netanyahu Launches Anti-Iranian Twitter Campaign

Netanyahu Launches Anti-Iranian Twitter Campaign

by Stephen Lendman

He's obsessed with Iran. He's Israel's worst ever leader. He exceeds Sharonian evil. He responded harshly to Hassan Rohani's election.

He attacked him unfairly. He called his agenda "talk and enrich. Talk and continue to enrich uranium. For future nuclear weapons."

"We cannot accept anything less than the total cessation of all enrichment of nuclear materials at all levels, removal from Iran of all enriched nuclear material, closure of Iran's elicit nuclear facilities," he said.

"Until Iran meets these demands, pressure must be stepped up and Iranian nuclear program must be stopped. Period."

His Twitter campaign is called "The Real Face of Iran." He's targeting Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. More on it below.

His October UN General Assembly Address mentioned Iran 70 times. Separately, he mentioned Rohani 25 times.

One anti-Iranian epithet followed another. He rages against the Islamic Republic every chance he gets.

He falsely claims it wants Israel destroyed. He lies about its nuclear program. It's entirely peaceful.

Iran threatens no one. Netanyahu's bluster wore thin long ago. It continues unabated. The New York Times was uncharacteristically critical.

On October 11, it headlined "Netanyahu Takes a Lonely Stance Denouncing Iran," saying:

He "come(s) off sounding shrill. (He) risks seeming frozen in the past amid a shifting geopolitical landscape."

He's "(i)ncreasingly alone abroad and at home. (He) stubbornly argues that if people would just study the facts, they would surely agree with him."

He launched an "energetic (anti-Iranian) media blitz. (He) embarked  on the public-diplomacy campaign of his career."

He's trying to prevent what he calls "a bad deal" with Iran. He insists on a complete halt to Iranian enrichment as well as maintaining stiff sanctions.

He "appears out of step with" growing numbers of others. He's increasingly isolated. It's not new for "a man with few personal friends."

He never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity to do the wrong thing. He's "comfortable predicting disaster." He likes "scaring people." According to Jerusalem political consultant Mitchell Barak:

"The problem is now he's lost momentum. His message is clear. His message is the same. The situation is the same, but everyone else's perspective has changed."

Since addressing the UN in October, he hasn't stopped selling his message. Israeli political analysts call him action averse but diplomatically deft. He's comfortable behind a microphone or in front of a camera.

According to The Times:

"His United Nations speech went through 50 drafts, and 45 minutes before go-time he replaced three pages near the top with a single punchy paragraph ending: 'Hope charts the future. Vigilance protects it.' "

Iran remains his "signature issue." Israeli journalist/Netanyahu biographer Ben Caspit said:

"Even though most Israelis dislike him, they see him as the best advocate. He knows how to deliver the goods when we are talking about talking."

"He's a professional whistleblower. He's a professional prophet. But all the time pessimistic, threatening."

He's increasingly a solo act on the world stage. He's a one-man show in Israel. Until Avigdor Lieberman's disgraceful acquittal on serious charges demanding punishment, he doubled as foreign minister.

Despite opposition within his Likud Party ranks, no challenger to his top status emerged.

His office wall features a map of Iran prominently. It's his obsession. He repeatedly cries wolf about a nonexistent threat.

He's accused of pursuing a Messianic crusade. He claims a near divine right to defend Israel from a nuclear Iran.

"I'm not going to let that happen," he says. "It's not going to happen." He knows Iran's program is peaceful.

He claims otherwise publicly. He threatens to attack unilaterally. He's partnered with Obama's war on Syria.

He's waging one on Occupied Palestine. He calls nonviolent civilians terrorist threats. His main obsession remains Iran. He wants a regional rival removed.

On November 5, Haaretz headlined "Netanyahu launches Twitter campaign against Iran's Khamenei to show 'real face of Iran."

He began by focusing on anti-American protests. On November 4, they marked Student Day. They reflected the 34th anniversary of taking over Washington's Tehran embassy.

Demonstrators burned American flags. They chanted "Death to America." They have just cause to be angry.

Netanyahu's official Twitter feed headlined "The Real Face of Iran." It featured photos of Iranians burning US flags. It showed Imam Khamenei denouncing America.

It ignored his support for nuclear negotiations. At the same time, he's justifiably negative on their outcome.

"With God's permission," he said, "we will not be harmed by these negotiations. (I)f (they) reach a conclusion then all the better, but if they don't it will mean that the country must stand on its own feet."

He criticized Washington for imposing lawless sanctions. They harm ordinary Iranians most.

"We must not trust an enemy who smiles," he said. "From one side, the Americans smile and express a desire to negotiate, and from another side they immediately say all options are on the table."

Obama insists he'll "take (none) off the table, including military options, in terms of making sure that we do not have nuclear weapons in Iran."

Netanyahu took full advantage of anti-American street protests.

"People are saying: What is the true face of the Iranian regime," he asked?

"(T)hey obviously changed their style. They speak now in English and they smile. They smile in the talks in Europe."

"But that regime, which is controlled by Khamenei, has tens of thousands of people on the streets of Tehran today chanting 'death to America,' celebrating the seizure of the US Embassy in 1979, 34 years ago."

"They're celebrating, and Khamenei, who is the real ruler of Iran, yesterday says: 'America is the most hated country in the world. You can't believe a word of what they say.' And he fuels that hatred. That's the real Iran."

"Do we want this country to have nuclear weapons? And the answer is: Absolutely not. America and the P5+1 should listen to the chants of ‘Death to America’ in Tehran, and give no discounts to Tehran."

A Final Comment

On November 7, Netanyahu rejected what Washington calls a "first step" interim six-month agreement in return for limited sanctions relief.

It weakens pressure, he said. "Iran's concessions are non-concessions," he claims.

Iranian officials maintain optimism. Thursday talks began well, they said. At the same time, discussions aren't easy. Much remains unresolved.

After the morning session, Catherine Ashton's spokesman, Michael Mann, said EU nations hope to make concrete progress.

Talks seek a verifiable agreement satisfying everyone. Iran must prove its peaceful nuclear intentions, he added.

Deputy Foreign Minister/senior negotiator Seyed Abbas Araqchi rejected reports about Iran suspending its enrichment for six months.

It's "important to us and is our redline," he said. Many differences remain, he added.

"Bringing the viewpoints close to each other is not an easy job and it is still too early for an assessment."

"We can say that we are in a good and positive situation, but we should wait to see at what speed the viewpoints come close to each other."

Talks "continue on Friday. Various and complicated issues are on the negotiating table, and reaching an agreement is not an easy job and we hope that we can have good progress today and tomorrow."

More talks may follow, he added. Geneva will likely host them. "Iran's goal is endorsement of an agreement between the two sides, and the other side also has the same view," he stressed.

Anti-Iranian hostility persisted for decades. Clear signs of change aren't apparent. America has lots of proving to do.

Rhetoric is no substitute for fair-minded policy. None mattering most appears forthcoming.

AFP Twitter feed hacked, flooded with pro-Assad tweets

Published time: February 26, 2013 23:53

Pro-Assad cyber activists have hacked the Agence France-Presse news agency's Twitter, filling it with propaganda aimed at counterbalancing what they call “fabricated news” by Western media sources.

The @AFPphoto profile was compromised at around 16:45 GMT and was tweeting unsanctioned material until the account’s temporary suspension later on Tuesday.

The Syrian Electronic Army, known for their attacks on Sky News Arabia and Al-Jazeera Mobile, has claimed the responsibility for the cyber-attack.

On its website, the group claimed that it was defending the Syrian Arab people against Western media coverage of the unfolding events on the ground and accused the news outlets of “broadcasting fabricated news about what is happening in Syria.”

Deputy global news editor for AFP Pierre Celerier, confirmed that the photos posted are not AFP images, and are allegedly of Iraqi journalists killed in Syria and the site of a car bombing.

During about an hour of uncontrolled operation, the hackers managed to accuse President Obama of supporting the use of child soldiers in the rebel army in Syria.

A picture tweet allegedly shows a child beheading government prisoners.

“#Obama overturns ban against child soldiers while Syrian rebels continue with the illegal practice twitter.com/AFPphoto/statu…” hacked AFP account tweeted.

The online activists have also faulted the US leader for supporting Al-Qaeda elements in the country while ignoring popular support for President Assad from the citizens of the country, with photo posts of Syrians rallying for the government cause.

On Monday, AFP also confirmed it had fallen victim to a so called “phishing” attack which attempted to thieve the identity of employees by getting them to login to a fake AFP website.

Kuwaiti youth gets 5 years in jail for insulting emir on Twitter

A Kuwaiti opposition youth activist has been given the maximum sentence of five years in prison for insulting the 'inviolable' emir on Twitter in the third case of its kind since January, following a crackdown on free speech in the country.

Mohammad Eid al-Ajmi will likely appeal his case, despite the fact that his sentence took “immediate effect,” said lawyer Mohammad al-Humaidi, director of the Kuwait Society for Human Rights.

The sentencing was the latest in a series of similar prosecutions for criticizing the 'immune' emir on social media.

Last month, the same court sentenced Ayyad al Harbi and Rashed al Enezi to two years in jail each on similar charges of defaming the emir of Kuwait, the third such case in less than two months. Both are awaiting appeals court rulings.

Enezi did not mention the emir by name in the tweet, but the court said that it was clear who he intended to insult.

A large number of youth activists in Kuwait are on trial on charges similar to the three most recent indictments, and more verdicts are expected in the forthcoming weeks, Humaidi said.

On Tuesday, a verdict will be issued on three different former opposition MPs who criticized the emir at a public rally in October last year. At the time, tensions between authorities and the opposition had flared ahead of a parliamentary election, which the opposition said was illegitimate.

The opposition claimed that voting rules introduced by Sheikh Sabah’s emergency decree in October would tip the December elections in favor of pro-government candidates. Security forces used stun grenades and tear gas to disperse at least three large rallies in support of an imprisoned opposition candidate.

Kuwait is one of several Middle East states that censors social media. In November 2012, the United Arab Emirates also adopted hard-hitting cyber laws, saying that posts damaging to the stature of the state or its institutions would result in a prison sentence. The UAE also banned “information, news, caricatures or any other kind of pictures” that authorities deemed threatening to security or “public order.”

And in November 2012, a Qatari poet was sentenced to life in prison when he wrote and published a poem that encouraged Qataris to overthrow the country's ruling system; he is also appealing his case.

On Monday, the Telegraph reported that the UK’s Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer, said that investigations into comments on networks such as Twitter would have a “chilling effect” on free speech within Britain. Prosecutions in the country involving social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook have increased nearly ninefold in the last four years.

According to the Kuwaiti constitution, the emir is “immune and inviolable,” and it is illegal to criticize him. The country has been increasing crackdowns on those using social media to voice discontent with the emir since last April, as part of new policies announced by Kuwaiti Information Minister Shaikh Mohammad Al Mubarak Al Sabah: “The government is now in the process of establishing laws that will allow government entities to regulate the use of the different new media outlets such as Twitter in order to safeguard the cohesiveness of the population and society,” he said.

That same month, Kuwait also voted in favor of a legal amendment which could make insulting God and the Prophet Mohammad punishable by death. The amendment was approved last December.

“We call on the government to expand freedoms and adhere to the international [human rights] conventions it has signed,” Humadi said. Kuwait is a US ally and a major regional oil producer.

In November, Amnesty International criticized the country for its charges against opposition leader Musallam al-Barrak for “undermining the status of the emir.”

His arrest and prosecution were described as “outrageous,” and “yet another manifestation of the increasing restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly in Kuwait,” said Ann Harrison, Deputy Director for Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa Program.

The “Kuwaiti royal family wields enormous power,” Human Rights Watch said last November.

Michael Gove Advisers Accused Of Twitter Smears Via @toryeducation

Education secretary Michael Gove could be facing an investigation over allegations that his advisers sent abuse to journalists on Twitter.

The row, which was investigated by the Observer, was sparked after an anonymous twitter account @toryeducation attacked the paper's political editor Toby Helm.

Michael Gove has come under fire for the alleged conduct of two of his special advisers

Labour's Shadow Education Secretary, Stephen Twigg has written to Cabinet Secretary Jeremy Heywood requesting an investigation be launched into the conduct of two of Gove's Special Advisers following the smear allegations contained in the Observer.

The account also apparently attacked the Financial Times' education correspondent, Chris Cook, suggesting he is a "stalker" and accused Helm of being "a Labour stooge" and promoting Britain's entry to the Euro while he worked at the Daily Telegraph, calling him "an activist, not a professional hack".

The Observer alleged that two of Gove's special advisers Dominic Cummings and Henry de Zoete contibuted to the Twitter feed, and had been asked to tone down the feed's output in 2011 by Henry Macrory, then Tory party head of press.

Both advisers, whose salaries are paid by the taxpayer, have denied contributing to the feed.

After Twitter speculation about the Observer story, Ladbrokes reported a rush of money on Gove to be next Cabinet exit, slashing odds from 25/1 to 8/1.

James Chapman (Mail)
. save your money. It appears to be prompted by a spad/hack Twitter row. If it leads to Gove quitting I'll eat my hat

After the story's publication, the Twitter account @toryeducation, retweeted an attack on the Observer's Helm, written a year ago by fellow journalist Sarah Vine, Gove's wife.

Sarah Vine
when does stop pretending to objectivity and admit he's a political activist not a neutral reoprter

Sarah Vine
ah, thank you. Toby helm seems to be quite angry about a lot if things. One fears for his blood pressure.

Ministers are held responsible for the conduct of their advisers, under new rules devised following the Labour party scandal where a spin doctor, Damian McBride was found to be planning to spread flase rumours about high-profile Tories.

According to the code, advisers "should avoid anything which might reasonably lead to the criticism that people paid from public funds are being used for party political purposes… the preparation or dissemination of inappropriate material or personal attacks has no part to play in the job of being a special adviser as it has no part to play in the conduct of public life.

"Any special adviser ever found to be disseminating inappropriate material will automatically be dismissed by their appointing minister."

Twitter Hacked: Up To 250,000 Passwords Taken

Around 250,000 Twitter users may have had their accounts compromised by computer hackers.

The social networking site said usernames, email addresses and encrypted passwords may have been taken during an "extremely sophisticated" attack on its systems.

It said one attack was shut down moments after it was detected, adding that the passwords of users who may have been affected had been reset.

In a blog postin g , Bob Lord, director of information security at Twitter, said there had been "a recent uptick in large-scale security attacks aimed at US technology and media companies", with the New York Times among those targeted.

He said: "Our investigation has indicated the attackers may have had access to limited user information - usernames, email addresses, session tokens and encrypted/salted versions of passwords - for approximately 250,000 users.

"As a precautionary security measure, we have reset passwords and revoked session tokens for these accounts."

"This attack was not the work of amateurs and we do not believe it was an isolated incident," he added. "The attackers were extremely sophisticated and we believe other companies and organisations have also been recently similarly attacked."

One expert said the hackers may have gained access through an employee's home or work computer by exploiting vulnerabilities in Java, a widely-used computing language.

Ashkan Soltani, an independent privacy and security researcher, said such a move would give attackers "a toehold" in Twitter's internal network, potentially allowing them to track user information as it travelled across the company's systems or break into specific areas, such as the authentication servers that process users' passwords.

Although the hackers are unlikely to have gained any confidential information, Mr Soltani said the stolen credentials could be used to access other services for which a person has signed up using the same username and password.

Mr Lord said that although "only a very small percentage" of users were potentially affected, everyone who uses the site should ensure their password is secure.

He said passwords should be at least 10 characters long, contain upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols, and be different to passwords used for other online accounts.

250,000 Twitter accounts compromised in sophisticated cyber attack

Twitter has become the latest target of a sophisticated cyber attack, with around 250,000 accounts exposed. The breach appears to be the latest in a string of attacks on news content sites that’s being blamed on Chinese hackers.

In its blog, Twitter has announced that it has detected “unusual access” patterns to user’s data and one live attack, which the company has successfully disabled. However, the company states that quarter of a million users have had their information hacked.

“This attack was not the work of amateurs, and we do not believe it was an isolated incident. The attackers were extremely sophisticated, and we believe other companies and organizations have also been recently similarly attacked,” statement explained.

As a precautionary security measure, Twitter has reset passwords and revoked session tokens for those accounts it believes were compromised. The company also warns of increased cyber-attack activity throughout the internet and encourages strengthening one’s account passwords.

The social media giant, which arguably revolutionized the news world with immediate access to information, concurs with the recent US Department of Homeland Security warning to disable Java on internet browsers. The company is also “helping government and federal law enforcement in their effort to find and prosecute these attackers to make the Internet safer for all users.”

Twitter fell short of accusing anyone of the attack, but indirectly indicated that it followed a pattern previously reported by the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.

On Wednesday, the NYT have announced that passwords and accounts of their staff have been infiltrated for four months by hackers from China.

The timing of the attacks coincided with an investigative report into the wealth of Wen Jiabao, China’s prime minister.

The Times hired an expert to determine the source of the attack who concluded that “the attacks started from the same university computers used by the Chinese military to attack United States military contractors in the past.”

China’s Ministry of National Defense responded to the accusations “Chinese laws prohibit any action including hacking that damages Internet security.” It added that “to accuse the Chinese military of launching cyberattacks without solid proof is unprofessional and baseless,” NYT quotes.

On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal made similar accusations, “Chinese hackers believed to have government links have been conducting wide-ranging electronic surveillance of media companies including The Wall Street Journal.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei was quoted by the WSJ as saying “Cyber-attacks are transnational and anonymous. It's very hard to track the source of attack,” he said. “To presume the source of a hacking attack based on speculation is irresponsible and unprofessional.” He added that “Chinese authorities make serious efforts in fighting cyber-attacks.”

Also on Thursday, Bloomberg announced that unsuccessful attempts had been made to access its system.

Data Privacy Day 2013: Twitter reveals US government makes 80% of info requests

Twitter has released its second transparency report, which demonstrated a frightening increase in requests for user data by the US government and ignited serious concerns over privacy and free expression.

The list disclosed data requests from over 30 nations, and revealed that the US government was responsible for 815 of the 1,009 information requests in the second half of 2012 – just over 80 percent of all inquiries.

Twenty percent of all US requests were 'under seal,' meaning that users were not notified that their information was accessed.

The overall number of requests worldwide also steadily increased last year, rising from 849 in the January to June 2012 period to 1009 in the July to December 2012 period.

Twitter’s legal policy manager Jeremy Kessel blogged that, “it is vital for us (and other Internet services) to be transparent about government requests for user information.”

“These growing inquiries can have a serious chilling effect on free expression – and real privacy implications,”
he wrote.

He went on to express hopes that the publication of the transparency data would be helpful in two ways – “to raise public awareness about these invasive requests,” and “to enable policy makers to make more informed decisions.”

The majority of US requests were subpoenas, which comprised 60 percent of government demands for information. Subpoenas usually seek user information such as email addresses affiliated with accounts and IP logs. A user's whereabouts can generally be located by the IP address they are using.

Twitter complied with US government requests 69 percent of the time, according to the report.

Twitter released its transparency report on January 28, dubbed ‘Data Privacy Day.’ The US National Cyber Security alliance said it founded the day to “empower people to protect their privacy.”

According to Twitter's report, several other governments made over 10 requests each for personal information, including Brazil, Canada, France, Japan and the UK. Japan ranked the second-highest on the list after the US; however, the US made 753 more demands for information than Japan.

Google released a statement marking the occasion, saying that the company “[doesn’t] want our services to be used in harmful ways,” and that it is “important that laws protect you against overly broad requests for your personal information.”

Earlier this month, France ruled that Twitter must disclose to authorities the identities of people writing anti-Semitic tweets using the hashtags #UnBonJuif [A Good Jew] and #UnJuifMort [A Dead Jew]. The social networking platform will be fined 1,000 euros a day until it complies.

The publication of the survey came shortly after Google published its own transparency report, which showed a similarly disturbing 25 percent rise in data requests from government authorities. The report also revealed that the US had made the most requests for private information to Google of any government: Over 8,438 in the second half of 2012.

UK-based rights group Privacy International later commented that “Google, Facebook and Twitter are highly vulnerable to government intrusion.”

“I am alarmed by the number of government requests and concerned that so many are done with merely a subpoena,” said John Simpson, a consumer advocate with the California-based group Consumer Watchdog. “A warrant should be required.”

Rhyme it: Online robot creates poetry out of Twitter posts

A Twitter bot turning random public posts into poetry has become the latest darling of Twitter. Pentametron is represented by Shakespeare’s face framed in a Twitter egg, and rhymes random users’ posts into poetic couplets.

Knowingly or not many users write their posts on Twitter in iambic pentameter. Pentametron, the online robot created by enthusiast Ranjit Bhatnagar seeks out such tweets and then re-tweets them in rhyming couplets.

The rhymed tweets appear on Pentametron’s public Twitter account and on the robot’s website. Users whose public messages, fitting into the ten-syllable alternating-stress meter commonly used by Shakespeare, may never even know their posts have become part of an amusing online poetry project.

The robot uses only plain text, first of all getting rid of emoticons and smiles, the Gawker reported earlier this year. Then the robot checks the pronunciation of each word in the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary to determine whether the post is in iambic pentameter and then combines the posts into couplets and even 14-lined sonnets.

The creator of the robot Ranjit Bhatnagar says he’s always been keen to find ways to make his life brighter. "I always find some new funny or accidentally profound thing there to enjoy," he told Gawker.

"It's fascinating to me that … one of the most popular sites just moves words around… One of the goals of Pentametron is to show how weird and interesting this giant flood of language is," he added.

‘Sugarmama has arrived’: Sharapova takes Twitter by storm

Russian tennis queen Maria Sharapova needed just one short entry to become a star on Twitter.

“Your ultimate sugarmama has arrived,” Sharapova’s first ever tweet said.

The entry was followed by a colorful picture, on which the World No. 2 imitates the inflating of soap bubbles.

Over 23.000 people followed Maria’s microblog in the first hours after it was launched, with the number increasing every minute.

Besides Twitter, Sharapova has an account on Facebook and an official website.

The 25-year-old is currently in Melbourne competing in the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open.

Maria had a perfect start to the event, not giving a single game away to compatriot Olga Puchkova 6-0 6-0 in the first round.

Social selection: MPs to look for young aides on Twitter

Members of the youth movement Nashi. (RIA Novosti / Sysoev)

Members of the youth movement Nashi. (RIA Novosti / Sysoev)

From the end of January Russian lawmakers will start searching popular social networking services and various websites to recruit young people as their assistants.

The move is part of a program aimed to popularize work in state structures which was developed by the presidential council on inter-ethnic relations. Under the document, deputies at all levels must have at least one aide aged between 18 and 30, while those in rural settlements can even involve 15-year-olds in their work.

Even though youngsters will not get paid, they will obtain experience in politics and, also, have a chance to realize their ideas through lawmakers, a member of the council, United Russia deputy Viktor Volodarsky told Izvestia daily.

Vacancies and requirements for candidates will be posted on official internet websites of state departments, legislatures, and United Russia’s regional branches as well as on pages of social networks such as Twitter.

The program will run till the end of 2016 – when the new State Duma (lower house) will be elected.

Under the law, each MP can have up to 45 aides, including five staff members and 40 volunteers. Each deputy’s assistant is allowed to visit state offices and departments.

Young volunteers can often be rather useful for lawmakers, says a senior member of the majority United Russia party, Olga Batalina. Many of them later become staff members or participate in other projects supervised by their bosses, she explained.

Fair Russia’s Valery Gartung argues though that the proposed popularization idea makes absolutely no sense. In his view, the Duma’s image has been tainted lately as “the parliament turns any ridiculous ideas suggested by executive power into legislative initiatives.”

Brad Pitt joins Chinese Twitter, hints at visit to communist state

Hollywood star Brad Pitt is so popular in China that he has signed up for an account on the Chinese version of Twitter. His first post on Wiebo hinted that the actor may soon be visiting the communist state, drawing comments from thousands of users.

“It is the truth. Yup, I'm coming,” a message posted on Pitt’s page on Sina Weibo read.

The news of one of the world’s sexiest men planning to visit China was shared and quoted over 30,000 times and sparked a wave of comments, with thousands of surprised users expressing their excitement, AFP reported.

It is unclear if Pitt meant that he would be visiting China, or if he was just marking his arrival on the microblogging website.

Pitt's account had already gained over 100,000 followers in the six hours following the first post.

According to various film websites, Pitt was banned from entering China after starring in the 1997 movie 'Seven Years in Tibet,' based on the true story of the Austrian mountain climber who befriended the Dalai Lama while China began its occupation of Tibet. Beijing was reportedly angered by the film's negative depiction of the Chinese.

The Chinese government has long regulated and censored Internet activity in the country. Many popular sites such as Facebook and Twitter are blocked in China.
