NRA Inundates Newtown Residents With Anti-Gun Control Robocalls (Audio)

NRA Inundates Newtown Residents With Anti-Gun Control Robocalls (Listen)

Some residents of Newtown, Conn., are understandably upset at the National Rifle Association for bombarding them with pro-gun robocalls and postcards that ask the community to oppose the gun-control measures that the state legislature is considering in the wake of the deadly mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

“Folks in Newtown have been receiving ‘Robo Calls’ from the NRA this week,” read a message the gun-control advocacy group Newtown Action Alliance posted to Facebook on Thursday. “Aside from being insensitive and uninvited, these calls may be in violation of telemarketing laws as they do not give the option to opt-out of future calls during the call.”

One resident, Tom Maurath, told The Huffington Post that he got a postcard from the NRA that read, “Despite public outcry, anti-gun legislators in the Connecticut General Assembly are aggressively forging ahead with numerous proposals that are designed to disarm and punish law-abiding gun owners and sportsmen.” Maurath said that he also was on the receiving end of a robocall from the group, and that the message was similar to the one on the postcard.

“The idea that this message could have been delivered to a sibling of one of the families who lost children at [Sandy Hook Elementary School] is just appalling,” he said.

The NRA claims it was calling only residents who were members or supported the pro-gun lobby, but Maurath, a registered independent, says he has no connection to the organization or its affiliates.

The Huffington Post:

“I received one of these,” Newtown resident Christopher Wenis wrote on Facebook Thursday afternoon. “I was insulted and offended.” Wenis told The Huffington Post in an interview Friday night that in the 36 hours since he first posted his response, he received two more robocalls from the NRA, one later on Thursday night and one on Friday evening.

“I’ve got a 5-year-old son who went to preschool on the Sandy Hook Elementary School campus,” Wenis explained. “And this was a really hard week for me on a lot of levels. These calls were the very last thing I needed.”

...In the months since the tragic school shooting in December, Newtown has become a focal point for the nation’s renewed debate over gun control, as well as an international symbol of America’s epidemic of gun violence. The Connecticut Legislature is considering a bevy of gun-control measures in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre. On Tuesday, a bill requiring universal background checks for gun purchases in Connecticut cleared a key committee. The state already has a ban in place on military-style assault weapons.

‘There’s no logic to it’ – experts slam new gun control bill

Congress is weighing a proposed ban on assault weapons introduced in hopes of curbing the spreading epidemic of mass shootings in America, but the language of the law could still allow for a lot of heavy-duty firearms to be legally bought and sold.

Last year’s tragic massacre in Newtown, Connecticut is being considered the catalyst in approving some sort of firearm law reform, but Second Amendment advocates have called into question the constitutionality of approving any such bill that could be seen as a direct attack on the right to bear arms. A recent proposal courtesy of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) has been touted around Washington as a possible solution to the rash of gun violence that has swept America before and since the Newtown shooting, but a new analysis of the proposal suggests that the law could only do so much to keep guns off the streets.

If approved, Sen. Feinstein’s proposal would ban the buying and selling of 157 specific firearms designed for military and law enforcement use. “The purpose is to dry up the supply of these weapons over time, therefore there is no sunset on this bill,” she told lawmakers in Washington. Still available for purchase in stores, however, would be roughly 2,200 other makes and models of assault weapons — in some cases nearly identical to weapons being banned.

According to a new report by the Associated Press, some weapons that have made the ban list have related models that, while slightly physically different can cause just as much damage.

"There's no logic to it," says Greg Danas, the president of a Massachusetts-based expert witness business and firearms ballistic laboratory. Commenting to the AP for a report published Monday morning, Mr. Danas questions what could come of a possible gun ban that might be more for show than anything else.

"What kind of effect is it going to have?" he asks the AP.

"I can't imagine what the difference is," former FBI agent John Hanlon adds to the AP. Hanlon is the survivor of a 1986 gun battle in Miami that left five injured federal officers injured and two dead. But while Sen. Feinstein’s bill would ban the retailing of one mode of the Ruger .223 caliber Mini-14 that almost killed him, a different version that isn’t as compact is actually exempt: despite different classifications in the eyes of Congress, both models can be equipped with detachable magazines that hold dozens of rounds of ammunition.

"What a joke," says Hanlon.

"It's irrelevant," adds Edmund Mireles, a fellow FBI agent who survived the Miami shootout. "They're equally dangerous."

Sen. Feinstein has explained her proposal as one designed to "make crystal clear" to Americans that hunters and sportsman would not have their guns seized by a partial firearm-ban. Adding to the AP’s report, though, a former congressional staffer involved in the 1994 gun control debate says the senator’s intentions don’t end right there, though.

"The other purpose of the list was to have a high profile way of assuring certain folks — including legislators — that we would not be going after their weapons that they use for those legitimate purposes," Lenett says.

For comparison, the 1994 federal gun restrictions that Lenett worked on under President Bill Clinton exempted just under 375 weapons from being banned. Sen. Feinstein’s draft protects 2,200 firearms.

“Guns designed military use [are] bought all over this country and often used for mass murder. This is really an uphill road. If anyone asked today, ‘Can you win this?’ The answer is, ‘we don’t know,” Feinstein told USA Today last month.

Barack Obama is Pushing Gun Control at Home, but He’s a Killer Abroad

On 27 January CBS aired an interview with the newly inaugurated President Barack Obama and his outgoing secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, during which the president faced accusations that under his watch America had retreated from its key role in world affairs. "The biggest criticism of this team," said the interviewer," has been [that there is] an abdication of the United States on the world stage, sort of reluctance to become involved in another entanglement."

A supporter of Barack Obama's gun control campaign holds up a sign as the president's motorcade passes in Minneapolis, Minnesota. (Photo: Brendan Smialowski/AFP/Getty Images)Obama interrupted. "Well, Muammar Gaddafi probably does not agree with that assessment," he said. "Or at least if he was around, he wouldn't agree with that assessment." Quite. Gaddafi, to whom the US authorised $15m worth of arms sales in 2009, is not around because he was murdered by a mob shortly after being sodomised by a bayonet following his ousting by US-led Nato bombardment. In the minutes between the sodomising and the summary execution there just wasn't time to reflect on US foreign policy.

The day after the interview was screened, Obama met with the Major Cities Chiefs Police Association and the Major County Sheriffs' Association. The president, fresh from boasting about having Gaddafi "smoked", wanted to discuss how to stop guns getting into the wrong hands, bolster the forces of law and order, and stem violence in US cities.

Over the last few weeks there has been a distinct incongruity – to say the least – between the agenda Obama is promoting at home and the one he defends abroad. His justification for targeted killings and drone strikes in foreign parts, prompted by his nomination of a CIA director, has coincided with his advocacy for stiffer gun control and appeals to respect human life following mass shootings. The result is an administration raising life and death issues in its actions and pronouncements but being unable to talk with any moral authority or ethical consistency on either.

In short, the credibility of a president in challenging lawless social violence in US cities is fundamentally undermined when he has his own personal kill list in violation of international law to terminate enemies elsewhere.

"The diplomatic historian traces foreign affairs as if domestic affairs were offstage disturbances," writes Walter Karp in his book The Politics of War. "The historian of domestic politics treats the explosions of war as if they were offstage disturbances. Were that true, we would have to believe that presidents who faced a mounting sea of troubles at home have nonetheless conducted their foreign policy without the slightest regard for those troubles – that individual presidents were divided into watertight compartments, one labelled 'domestic' and the other 'foreign'."

Yet that is precisely how the Obama administration appears to have compartmentalised its response to violence and its victims. One moment the Obamas are mourning the tragic loss of Hadiya Pendleton, the 15-year-old girl who attended his inauguration. She was shot less than a mile from their Chicago home while sheltering from the rain in a park. The first lady, Michelle Obama, who attended Hadiya's funeral on Saturday, said, through a spokeswoman: "Too many times, we've seen young people struck down with so much of their lives ahead of them."

The next, his administration is maintaining a stony silence over the murder of Abdulrahman al-Awlaki, the 16-year-old American born in Denver who was killed by a drone in Yemen in 2011. His father, Anwar (also American), was an Islamist cleric – killed by a drone a few weeks earlier. When asked about the incident during the election campaign, Robert Gibbs, former White House press secretary and senior adviser to Obama's re-election campaign, essentially blamed Abdulrahman for having the kind of dad the US wanted to kill. "I would suggest that you should have a far more responsible father if they are truly concerned about the wellbeing of their children."

On the one hand, we should not be surprised. These contradictions are inherent in the tension between the position to which he was elected and the forces that elected him. For all the global investment in Obama – peaking early, stratospherically and ridiculously, in the Nobel peace prize just nine months after he was voted in – he was elected to represent the interests of the most powerful and well-armed nation on Earth at a time of war. Murder was in the job description of the office he applied for and won to great fanfare. For all the claims of him becoming a great role model for young black men, he was always going to be responsible for the deaths of more innocents than Biggie and Tupac combined.

According to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, between 2004 and 2013 drone strikes have killed up to 893 civilians (including 176 children) in Pakistan, 178 civilians (including 37 children) in Yemen, and 57 civilians (including three children) in Somalia (while these started under Bush they were accelerated under Obama). According to the New York Times, his ambassador to Pakistan, Cameron Munter, complained to colleagues that "he didn't realise his main job was to kill people", a colleague said.

But Obama was returned to office by the votes of – among others – blacks, Latinos, youth and the poor, the very people and communities most likely to be blighted by gun violence. Michelle Obama came to Hadiya's funeral after considerable pressure had been applied by black communities in Chicago and nationwide. Since the shootings of children at Sandy Hook elementary school Obama has led an audacious push to galvanise a majority, in the country and in Congress, for tougher gun controls.

The unfortunate timing has highlighted the discrepancy between his foreign and domestic policies, exposing them not only as hypocritical but deeply tragic. While shop windows all around Obama's Chicago home hang posters saying "Stop killing people", the man they sent to the White House is doing precisely the opposite. Having shown his ability to rally human empathy to progressive causes at home, he then fails to recognise the common humanity of the innocents he is killing abroad.

"[America can be] a moral power," said Martin Luther King – on whose Bible Obama swore in as president – during the Vietnam war. "A power harnessed to the service of peace and human beings, not an inhumane power unleashed against defenceless people." That's as true on the streets of Chicago as it is in the border regions of Pakistan.

Fox Blames Alabama Hostage Case On Gun Control Supporters

While he works on launching a U.S. senatorial run in Massachusetts, Fox’s “Medical A-Team” psychiatrist, Keith Ablow, has his platform on the “fair and balanced” network to promote his candidacy. So this morning, when he visited Fox & Friends to discuss the psychological scars that might affect Ethan, the Alabama kindergartner just rescued after being held hostage for nearly a week, Ablow gratuitously attacked those who think this is another example of the need for stricter gun regulations and suggested they are so dedicated to an anti-gun agenda that they’d rather people get shot by the mentally ill than institutionalize them.

I’ve written many times about what a crackpot Ablow is and his propensity for diagnosing people without benefit of an examination. In this case, he diagnosed Ethan as more or less doomed to mental illness - without knowing much more than his first name. Reacting to a report that the boy has been “laughing, joking, playing and eating” after being reunited with his mother, Ablow rendered his opinion: These are “also the things that five- or six-year-olds do when they’re desperately trying to maintain some semblance of normality… I can tell you that the effort to maintain that sense of normality in and of itself has set the stage for all kinds of trouble down the road. So, as sad as it is, Ethan isn’t OK. He’s at tremendous risk for depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol and drug abuse later in life. Fractured relationships. All manner of disabilities from psychological problems.”

Nobody challenged Ablow’s “evaluation.” Instead, Steve Doocy opened the door for Ablow to opine on policy by asking if maybe “somebody should have connected some dots” about the state of the abductor’s mental health.

Ablow replied:

Gee, ya think? And there’ll be people, by the way, who say this is an argument for more gun control. Those people are reprehensible. Because the bottom line is, this guy had a hearing for medicine coming up. You mean to say the court couldn’t have connected the dots between that and the fact that his neighbors said that he had threatened kids’ lives? And that he had beaten a dog to death with a pipe and said, ‘We are holding you in the psychiatric unit for evaluation against your will.’ Really?

Gretchen Carlson prodded for more by “asking” why they don’t do that.

With unintentional hilarity, Ablow said it’s because it takes “work” and “It takes not pontificating and trying to make political points by saying we’re gonna take everybody’s guns! …Obvious people who need help aren’t given that help when we could deliver it – because we have the expertise – but we’re not willing to allocate resources, partly out of stigma, and partly out of the fact that people would rather try to pander to certain voting blocs by saying it’s all about guns. Which it isn’t.

Doocy closed by validating the hypothesis: “It didn’t have to happen.”

Harry Reid Weighs In on Gun Control Debate

Harry Reid

Since President Obama put reducing gun violence high on his list of action items for his second term, members of Congress are obliged to make their own stances known on the contentious issue of gun control.

For his part, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is willing to push for more extensive background checks on would-be gun owners, but he’s maintaining a wait-and-see stance on banning assault-style weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, possibly aiming to follow the president’s lead without alienating gun-friendly Nevadans.

The Washington Post:

The Senate’s top Democrat offered fresh details Sunday about his position in the renewed debate over guns, as he endorsed expanding background checks on gun sales and promised to consider bans on assault-style weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

“Everyone acknowledges we should do something with background checks,” Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said in an interview on ABC News’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos.”

[...] “I didn’t vote for the assault weapons last time because it .?.?. didn’t make sense,” Reid said. Nonetheless, Reid said he plans to “take a look” at the latest proposal. And imposing new restrictions on high-capacity magazines is “something we definitely have to take a look at,” he said.

Gun Control Agenda Is Launching White Paranoid Extremists to Prepare for Armed Revolution

Peel back the code words of "defending" America and you have a treasonous movement in the works.

The battle over gun control has exposed a truth the mainstream media is apparently too shy to mention: A bunch of far-right, white, mostly Southern, paranoid extremists are preparing for armed revolution and apocalypse. They speak treason: literally.

They are preparing to "defend" America from America with arsenals of weapons and stockpiles of ammunition. Their "enemy" is everyone in America not like them.

They think the world is ending and/or that the government is out to get them. That doesn’t mean it will happen. But expect violence and assassinations. Their ideology is made up of equal parts racism, evangelical Christian fascination with the “end times,” hatred of President Obama, resentment of the “Old “South” variety and a Fox News/Glenn Beck/Rush Limbaugh version of world history.

As the New Yorker noted:

“Every demographic and political trend that helped to reëlect Barack Obama runs counter to the [South’s] self-definition:…The Solid South speaks less and less for America and more and more for itself alone… Solidity has always been the South’s strength, and its weakness. The same Southern lock that once held the Democratic Party now divides the Republican Party from the socially liberal, fiscally moderate tendencies of the rest of America… The South’s vices—‘violence, intolerance, aversion and suspicion toward new ideas’—grow particularly acute during periods when it is marginalized and left behind. An estrangement between the South and the rest of the country would bring out the worst in both—dangerous insularity in the first, smug self-deception in the second.”

The Republican/white/Southern extremists make reasonable gun control impossible. Their cataclysmic irrationality risks taking the debate into the twilight zone, and that “zone” is a zone of violence: call it the civil war continued by other means.

Some “leaders” in the pro-gun lobby have literally said they will kill to protect their right to arm themselves with arsenals that are fit for nothing but murder and war. These delusional Americans are a vocal minority, and they have extreme fears — gun confiscation, civil instability, a tyrannical government, a “takeover” of the US by the UN and that Obama is a communist.

If you pay attention to the rhetoric, you hear code words calling out to the types of people who called January 19 and Martin Luther King’s birthday “Gun Appreciation Day." The event chairman, Larry Ward, said in the press release, “The Obama administration has shown that it is more than willing to trample the Constitution to impose its dictates upon the American people.” Andrew P. Napolitano, a Fox News analyst, said in a video posted on the network’s GretaWire: “Here’s the dirty little secret about the Second Amendment, the Second Amendment was not written in order to protect your right to shoot deer, it was written to protect your right to shoot tyrants if they take over the government.”

Wayne LaPierre, chief executive of the National Rifle Association, delivered a rebuttal to President Obama's inaugural address. He accused the president of reducing the U.S. Constitution to "a blank slate for anyone's graffiti." LaPierre said the president "doesn't understand you. He doesn't agree with the freedoms you cherish."

In a piece in the Washington Times, Napolitano said that the Second Amendment “protects the right to shoot tyrants, and it protects the right to shoot at them effectively.” By definition these “tyrants” are those who “don’t agree with the freedoms you cherish.” In other words they are the government representing most Americans who are not insane gun-collecting survivalists, Southern white males afraid of the world, and assorted Fox News watchers.

As the Southern Poverty Law Center notes, the number of so-called patriot groups surged after President Obama was first elected president. “The swelling of the Patriot movement since that time has been astounding,” the report said. “From 149 groups in 2008, the number of Patriot organizations skyrocketed to 512 in 2009, shot up again in 2010 to 824, and then, last year, jumped to 1,274.”

In today's On the News segment: The Senate tackled the issue of gun control today; Keystone XL pipeline builder TransCanada filed a series of SLAPP suits against organizations and 19 individual protesters that stand in its way of building the pipeline; Republicans in Mississippi want to re-fight the Civil War; and more.

Thom Hartmann here – on the news...

You need to know this. For the first time since 2009, the U.S. economy shrank last quarter. New numbers out of the Commerce Department, show that the economy shrank in the fourth quarter of 2012 by point-1 percent. That's a complete reversal from the robust 3.1% growth rate, which we saw in the third quarter of 2012. What's behind the sudden drop? Conservative austerity spending cuts. Federal spending was down 15% in the fourth quarter, after rising 9.5% in the third quarter. And as we're seeing in the UK, which is on the verge of entering a triple-dip recession – Greece, which is on the verge of total collapse – and Spain, which has the highest unemployment rate in Europe – austerity kills economies. But thanks to Republican hostage-taking, and demands for more and more spending cuts – the United States is about to enter this same austerity death spiral in 2013. Already – the US is scheduled to enact austerity measures totaling 2.1% of GDP – which is more austerity than the U.K., France, and Spain have enacted thus far. And with even bigger spending cuts looming in a few months, it's only going to get worse. We need pro-growth policies, that put money back in the hands of working people. Spending cuts don't do that. And no nation, in the history of the world, has ever cut its way to prosperity.

In screwed news...a foreign corporation is building a toxic pipeline across our country – and also has threatened to ruin the lives of anyone who stands in opposition to the project. Numerous organizations and demonstrations have confronted the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, which is being built by the Canadian company TransCanada. In response, TransCanada filed a series of SLAPP suits against these organizations and 19 individual protesters who, according to Tar Sands Blockade, "were threatened with losing their homes and life's savings if the lawsuit went forward." One of those targeted with a SLAPP suit, Ramsey Sprague, responded by saying, "TransCanada is dead wrong if they think a civil lawsuit against a handful of Texans is going to stop a grassroots, civil-disobedience movement...This is nothing more than another example, of TransCanada repressing dissent, and bullying Texans who are defending their homes, and futures from toxic tar sands." However, TransCanada did succeed in getting a settlement in the lawsuit, which stipulates that activists can no longer trespass on, or cause damage to, Keystone XL property. But they can still let their voices be heard – and so can all of us. Getting people organized is the only way to defeat this toxic, ticking time-bomb for our environment.

In the best of the rest of the news...

The Senate tackled the issue of gun control today. In the first Senate judiciary Committee hearing of the 113th Congress, the issue was new gun control legislation, introduced by Senator Dianne Feinstein last week. Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, herself a victim of gun violence, gave an opening statement at the hearing calling on Senators to take action to reduce gun violence. Also at the hearing, was the NRA's Wayne LaPierre, who's been a very loud critic of any new gun control legislation, including universal background checks for all gun purchases. At the hearing, LaPierre again bashed the idea of background checks, saying they won't work. But as the ThinkProgress blog points out – the NRA's stance on this issue is wildly unpopular. In fact – according to a new Gallup poll – only 8% of the nation agrees with the NRA on opposing universal background checks. To put that in perspective, more people approve of Congress, polygamy, and human cloning than agree with the NRA on this issue. It's time to stop being afraid of how powerful the NRA is. It's an organization that's been taken over by out-of-touch, radical gun industry shills, who lost nearly every election they invested in, back in 2012.

The Republicans' election rigging schemes have hit another setback. On Tuesday, the Virginia state Senate's Privileges and Elections Committee voted down a bill, which would have changed how the state awards its Electoral College votes. All Democrats on the committee voted against the bill – as did four of eight Republicans – officially putting an end to the election rigging effort in that state. Meanwhile in Michigan, where Republicans were considering a similar scheme, Governor Rick Snyder slammed the idea saying he doesn't think it's "the appropriate time to look at it." He also said, "I'm very skeptical of the idea...I really view it as a question of you don't want to change the playing field so it's an unfair advantage to someone." Then again, Snyder was the same Governor who said he wasn't interested in passing Right-to-Work-for-less legislation in Michigan last year – and then immediately turned around and passed a Right-to-Work-for-less law anyway. But at least for now, it appears the Republican election rigging effort is on hold. Now it's time for progressives to get active, and push for a national popular vote, to make sure Republicans can't get away with these antics in the future.

And finally...Republicans in Mississippi want to re-fight the Civil War. After President Obama unveiled new gun control executive orders – a group of Tea Party lawmakers in Mississippi introduced legislation to create a permanent committee in the state, which would be dedicated to nullifying – or overturning – federal laws that Mississippi Tea Partiers don't like. The Constitution is very clear on this issue – the federal government has supremacy over the states. But several red states disagree – and are using the same tactics today, that proponents of Jim Crow segregation used after the Civil War. Tea Party lawmakers are not the ones to determine if federal laws are unconstitutional. That's the job of the courts – which is another problem in itself. But the point is – we've seen what happens when states think they can ignore basic federal laws to improve the lives of people in those states. It's basically why the Civil War was fought. Clearly, the Tea Party has not learned the lessons of history.

And that's the way it is today – Wednesday, January 30, 2013. I'm Thom Hartmann – on the news.

Amid growing national debate over gun violence, thousands of people marched in Washington on Saturday to press Congress and state legislators to back gun control measures.

The marchers were joined by some 100 residents of Newtown, Connecticut, where a mass elementary school shooting left 20 first-graders and six teachers dead.

People in the crowd were seen carrying signs reading “We Are Newtown,” “Guns Control Now,” “Stop NRA,” “What Would Jesus Pack” and many more. The demonstrators walked from the Capitol to the Washington Monument. Some held signs with the names of the victims of gun violence.

Among the speakers at the event was Education Secretary Arne Duncan who reassured the crowd that gun control was not about limiting firearm rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment. "This is about gun responsibility. This is about gun safety. This is about fewer dead Americans, fewer dead children, fewer children living in fear."

He said he and President Barack Obama would do everything possible to enact gun control policies. The organizers of the march backed Obama’s proposed sweeping package of federal gun-control laws, such as a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

"This is about trying to create a climate in which our children can grow up free of fear," Duncan said. "This march is a starting point; it is not an ending point … We must act, we must act, we must act."

The horrific massacre at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, has reinvigorated the national debate about gun violence. With exceptionally liberal gun control laws the United States has seen almost 88,000 Americans die in gun violence between 2003 and 2010, a UN reports says.

According to a 2007 Arms Survey, Americans possess an average of 88 guns per 100 people – the highest rate of gun ownership in the world.

Saturday’s rally comes a week after gun right advocates rallied across the country to show their opposition to firearms control. They argue that gun ownership is a constitutional right protected under the Second Amendment and helps protect their freedom.

With a powerful gun lobby even bereaved family members, who’ve lost loved ones to gun violence admit that the change would be difficult to be achieved.

"It's difficult to get laws changed when politicians are bought out, but we have to start somewhere," said Amy Journo, 38, an occupational therapist whose two sons, ages 5 and 7, attended Sandy Hook.

"I want to ensure that they (children) are safer, not just my children but all across the United States," Journo said.

Meanwhile, on the same day as the march took place, an unknown gunman opened fire outside a nightclub in Washington, DC, injuring at least five people, according to NBC4 Washington.

Thousands March In Washington for Gun Control

Thousands of protesters marched in Washington, DC on Saturday calling for national gun control legislation in the wake of recent gun violence tragedies in the U.S. The sea of protesters held signs reading "Ban Assault Weapons Now," "Gun Control Now" and "Stop NRA," among other messages.

About 100 residents of Newtown joined the march.

The demonstration culminated in a massive rally at the foot of the Washington Monument. The crowd stretched for about two blocks along Constitution Avenue, Associated Press reports.

Speakers at the Washington Monument called for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

“We’re living in the middle of a crisis,” said Dave Ackert, a father of two from Newtown, who helped organize the group that also included residents from other parts of Connecticut. “Many, many people want to take action. Newtown wants to be remembered as a tipping point for positive change to reduce gun violence.”

“[Newtown] has been the tipping point for so many people in this country,’’ said Molly Smith, one of the march’s organizers. “This is a movement – an honest to God movement.”

It began because Shannon Watts didn’t know what to tell her 12-year-old son about Newtown. The boy had been undone by what he still calls "The Batman Shooting” and left a movie theater sobbing a few days after Aurora, certain the man next to him had a gun. After months of therapy and medication he was just getting his balance back. What would she tell him now, Watts wondered, with 20 children dead in their first-grade classroom?

It began because Amy R. heard the news from Newtown over morning coffee in her North Carolina kitchen, and fought the urge to pull her 8-year-old out of school immediately. The more she read, the more she realized "how ignorant I was that so many guns were out there," she says. Finally, she wiped her tears and brought her son home from school 30 minutes early. "It's one of those moments when you just need to hold your child."

It began because Kim Russell went ahead with her son’s fourth birthday party as planned, two days after Newtown -- then had flashbacks about the days after Columbine, when she had gone to dinner with a teacher who said “that could have been at his school,” Russell says. Her dinner date was shot and killed by a 17-year-old mugger with a stolen Glock that night.

These women and others like them -- tens of thousands of others, it turns out -- are coming together to fight gun violence. They want to be a force for change, they say, like the bipartisan Mothers Against Drunk Driving (and the liberal progressive Momsrising.org, the conservative Christian OneMillionMoms.com and the new Moms Clean Air Force).

They know they are facing fierce odds: foes with more organization and money, the tendency of Americans to forget about guns between tragedies and a history of other groups that have tried and failed. But they want to become a movement and they think their time is now.

GETTING STARTED

In any tragedy there are two circles of victims. The smaller, more wounded cluster is filled with those who were hurt personally, who lost something they could name, or count, or touch. The second circle, much larger, contains the rest of us. Change begins with the first group but cannot succeed without the second.

The morning after Newtown, Watts woke up angry. “If I don’t do something, I am culpable,” she remembers thinking. She’d worked in corporate communications for 15 years before becoming a stay-at-home mom, and while not a pro with computers, she knew enough to create a Facebook page. She called it "One Million Moms For Gun Control," and shared the link with her 175 Facebook friends.

Halfway across the country, in Brooklyn, Marcie Bohan, a mother of three who is training to be a social worker, was also on Facebook and had just spontaneously written a note to a friend: “We need to organize a million mamas for gun control.” Not long afterward, she received a reply from an acquaintance in Virginia who was also connected to Watts. “I have a friend who just posted the same idea,” he said. “You two should talk.”

Bohan shared a link to Watts’s page, writing: “Come on Brooklyn. Let’s do this.” Russell, who knew Bohan from a long ago playgroup added a comment to the post. “I’m a victim of gun violence and I have wanted to do something for 13 years," she wrote.

By the next day, the two were among the five founders of the Brooklyn chapter of One Million Moms For Gun Control -- or 1MM4GC -- who gathered in Bohan’s kitchen, with Watts attending the meeting via Skype. They created a mission statement: “To reinstitute the assault weapons ban and establish other laws that will limit gun availability and misuse in the United States.” They also sorted through the emails that kept pouring in from around the country offering to form other chapters -- in Las Vegas and Boston, Denver and Florida, Northern Virginia and Southern Maine. Now there are more than 70 branches (including a chapter for Aurora, Colo., as well as one each for Grandmothers, Teachers and Dads), and the original page has accumulated more than 40,000 “likes” in its first 40 days.

How the NRA Undermined Congress’ Last Push for Gun Control

The NRA has already begun to lobby on Capitol Hill to counter the administration's effort.

To get a sense of what the NRA might do, it's helpful to look at how it scored a victory during the last major federal initiative to tighten gun control.

After a Virginia Tech student killed 32 students and faculty in April 2007, the Bush administration proposed legislation that would require all states to share the names of residents involuntarily committed to mental health facilities. The information would be provided to a Federal Bureau of Investigation database.

The idea, in part, was to help gun dealers get important information about whether potential customers were mentally ill.

In order to get the support of the NRA, Congress agreed to two concessions that had long been on the agenda of gun rights advocates — concessions that later proved to hamstring the database.

The NRA wanted the government to change the way it deemed someone "mentally defective," excluding people, for example, who were no longer under any psychiatric supervision or monitoring. The group also pushed for a way for the mentally ill to regain gun rights if they could prove in court that they'd been rehabilitated.

The NRA found allies on both sides of the aisle to champion the concessions.

Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., reportedly pushed the provisions, ultimately with the support of the bill's lead sponsor, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y. (McCarthy's husband was killed and her son wounded in a 1993 shooting on the Long Island Railroad.)

The NRA agreed to the support the bill, in exchange for provisions pushing states to create gun rights restoration programs.

Here's how it worked. It would cost money for states to share their data: A state agency would have to monitor the courts, collect the names of people who had been institutionalized, and then send that information to the FBI on a regular basis.

So, to help pay for data-sharing Congress created $375 million in annual federal grants and incentives. But to be eligible for the federal money, the states would have to set-up a gun restoration program approved by the Justice Department. No gun rights restoration program, no money to help pay for sharing data.

A spokesman for Dingell's office did not respond to calls for comment on this story. A McCarthy spokesman, Shams Tarek, said the congresswoman is now working on new legislation to "provide more incentives and stiffen penalties for states to put names in the database."

"We definitely think there's a lot of room for improvement," said Tarek.

The NRA supported Dingell and McCarthy's version of the bill, but the group won further concessions when the legislation reached the Senate.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., who once joked he'd like to bring a gun with him to the Senate floor, blocked the legislation, citing concerns about privacy and spending.

He negotiated language that, among other things, would allow a person's application for gun restoration rights to be granted automatically if an agency didn't respond within 365 days of the application and allowed people to have their attorney's fees reimbursed if they were forced to go to court to restore their rights.

The final bill was sent to President Bush for his signature in January 2008.

The NRA praised Coburn and released a statement calling the law a victory for gun owners: "After months of careful negotiation, pro-gun legislation was passed through Congress today." (The NRA didn't respond to calls for comment.)

In an email, a Coburn spokesman told ProPublica that the senator "does not operate as an agent of the NRA when considering legislation regarding gun rights" and pointed to a recent statement on the president's gun proposals. (In the statement, Coburn said he supports improving the mental health database, but said overall, "we first must ensure our constitutional rights and individual liberties.")

Since the bill's passage, two analyses have shown that the NICS database has significant gaps, partly because of the way the NRA managed to tweak the legislation. Many states aren't sharing all of their mental health records.

A July 2012 report by the Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, found that while the overall number of records increased exponentially since the law passed, the rise is largely due to cooperation from just 12 states.

The non-profit group Mayors Against Illegal Guns also released a report in 2011 showing that many states have failed to fulfill their obligations to report data on the mentally ill to the federal government. While Virginia and a few others have disclosed tens of thousands of records, 23 others and the District of Columbia reported fewer than 100 records. Seventeen states reported fewer than 10 records and four submitted no data at all.

"Millions of records identifying seriously mentally ill people and drug abusers as prohibited purchasers are missing from the federal background check database because of lax reporting by state agencies," the report said.

According to the report, the reasons for such uneven compliance vary by state. Some states don't turn over data because their privacy laws prevent them from doing so. Some states have a different interpretation on what kind of data needs to be provided, or what, exactly, constitutes "mentally ill" or "involuntarily committed."

Still others simply can't afford the expense of gleaning the data from the courts, providing it to the relevant state agency and then passing it on to the federal government.

The NRA-backed language creates problems for these states.

As a New York Times investigation found, many states haven't qualified for federal funding to share their data because they haven't established gun rights restoration programs.

In 2012, only 12 states received federal grants, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

A Coburn spokesman pointed out that some states have had trouble setting up restoration programs because gun control advocates in those states have protested them.

While mental health data has remained sparse, some states have made it easier for the mentally ill to restore their gun rights. As the Times noted, in Virginia some people have regained rights to guns by simply writing a letter to the state. Other Virginians got their rights back just weeks or months after being hospitalized for psychiatric care.

It's difficult to know just how many people in Virginia have had their gun rights restored because no agency is responsible for keeping track.

Despite the limitations of the mental health database, some gun control advocates still see it as better than nothing.

"The fact that so many states have been able to get so many records into the database does demonstrate a willingness on the part of certain groups to work on this issue and that's a good sign. The others really need to step up," said Lindsay Nichols a staff attorney at the San Francisco-based Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

The group, then known as the Legal Community Against Violence, was one of several gun control organizations that opposed the legislation when it was first signed into law.

Nichols is optimistic that the NRA won't succeed in commandeering the gun control debate the way the group did after Virginia Tech.

"I think there's new awareness among the public and legislators that we need to take this issue seriously and it's not an issue where the public is going to accept political wrangling."

Gun Control and Climate Change Arguments Taking Same Tack As 2009 Health Care Fight

If we want any part of President Obama's initiatives described in his inaugural speech to become reality in the next four years, we'd better gear up and get ready to fight, because they're dog-whistling the troops, particularly on the topics of climate change and gun control, just like they did in 2009 with health care reform.

In 2009, we were caught unawares. That can't happen this time, at least not if we hold any hope of getting things done this time around. Conservatives are already launching the time-honored strategies of lies, inflammatory speech, and exaggeration to push back on any effort whatsoever to make progress on climate change and gun control.

Fox News led the parade Tuesday morning with the theme that climate change isn't real, beginning with Fox and Friends Tuesday morning, and continuing on with Rush Limbaugh pompously pronouncing it a "hoax."

Meanwhile, there's a rising anti-chorus over mild gun control measures which are long overdue, in which the same overarching themes employed in 2009 over health care reform are beginning to emerge. Some examples:

  • In Ohio, state school board president Debe Terhar is defending her decision to share a Facebook photo of Hitler along with a message criticizing Obama's gun control proposals.
  • NRA President Wayne LaPierre gave a fiery speech on Monday night (video above), where he claimed the only reason to maintain a national registry of gun owners is to "tax them or take them," and further claiming that the REAL motive was to leave guns in the hands of the wealthy and criminals.
  • Anonymous has gotten in on the debate, using the Obama to Hitler comparison as well.
  • Juan Williams, writing for Fox News, claims that gun control is now "central to Obama's legacy." That's a clear-cut call for conservatives to mobilize.
  • Sheriffs in right-wing states are vowing to resist any efforts to implement gun control measures passed by Congress or tightened enforcement required by executive order.
  • Now the far right wingers have declared 2/23/2013 a "Day of Resistance" over the proposed gun measures. Anyone remember the call for the "tea party" which supposedly arose from the grassroots? Yeah.

These should raise the hackles on everyone's neck as we're thrust back into the days of death panels and socialism, resplendent with Obama as Hitler images, cries of armed resistance, and more. Indeed, some conservatives have figured out a way to resurrect death panels in the context of gun control, by inventing the myth that Obamacare will require doctors to inquire about guns in the home.

There will be protests at town halls, there will be more astroturf organizations with names like Americans for Constitutional Solutions and the like, and there will be a steady drumbeat on the part of the right wing to systematically tear apart every effort to actually move America toward some semblance of civilization.

Not this time. We won the health care battle and lost the war in 2010. They don't give a damn about climate change and guns as much as they do about firing up their dispirited base in order to win some elections in 2014. The sooner we recognize it and push back, not by dignifying their accusations, but bringing our own arguments forth into the public square, the better.

To that end, the answer to the nonsense about climate change should be strong economic arguments for making the changes that will slow our contribution to climate change while building the economy. President Obama made that argument in his speech, when he said, "We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries. We must claim its promise. That’s how we will maintain our economic vitality and our national treasure, our forests and waterways, our crop lands and snow capped peaks."

With regard to gun control, everyone seems very concerned with the rights of gun owners, and seems to think they trump everyone else's rights. How can the right wing, who claims to stand for the rights of innocents to life, tolerate dead children in a classroom? For those so devoted to the constitution, how can a right to life and liberty be trumped by one person's right to use a gun to take those?

Take the message back and make this an argument about the rights of every American to live in relative safety without the fear that their children and loved ones will be taken from them because there was no balance between the rights of gun owners and the rights of innocents.

Wayne LaPierre speaks for gun manufacturers, not gun owners. When he speaks of rights, he is speaking for the corporate persons who profit from the death and mayhem their products wreak on our society.

The bottom line here is that progressives have to take the offensive on these questions and get the public on our side before the wingers erode the support we've built up for both of these initiatives. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, and Sandy Hook, more Americans are open to reasonable gun control measures and climate change initiatives than ever before. The right wing knows it, and they're going to use it. It's up to us to stop it before it starts.

There Was a Time When Conservatives Advocated Gun Control

For anyone who missed it over the weekend, MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry had a rather interesting segment to open her show on Sunday, where she said conservatives haven't always been against gun control laws and the issue wasn't necessarily a partisan one. She gave viewers a little history lesson about the days when the Black Panthers were taking up arms on the streets of California and none other than conservative icon St. Ronnie Reagan was signing legislation to disarm them.

So... if we want to get conservatives to go along with some sort of gun control legislation, do we need to try to bring back the Black Panthers and get them back out there advocating for open carry? They all loved it when we had these TeaBirchers out there bringing guns to rallies and town hall meetings protesting the health care law. If Fox was going crazy over just a few of these New Black Panthers standing outside of a polling place, imagine how they'd act if we had the old Black Panther Party back, '60's style, armed and ready to stand up for their Second Amendment rights.

For more on what Harris-Perry was talking about here and what went down with the Black Panthers in the '60's, check out this article from The Atlantic from back in Sept. of 2011: The Secret History of Guns:

The Ku Klux Klan, Ronald Reagan, and, for most of its history, the NRA all worked to control guns. The Founding Fathers? They required gun ownership—and regulated it. And no group has more fiercely advocated the right to bear loaded weapons in public than the Black Panthers—the true pioneers of the modern pro-gun movement. In the battle over gun rights in America, both sides have distorted history and the law, and there’s no resolution in sight.

In Plain English

So Obama released his Executive Orders to Prevent Maniacs From Being Maniacs today. I’ve taken the time to translate the summaries into plain English below:

1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.

Tell the government to follow the law.

2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.

Tell the regulators to stop the stupid and useless regulations.

3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.

Pay the states back for the unfunded mandates that the Feds keeps making.

4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

Tell the Attorney General to do his job.

5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.

Start another unfunded mandate. (See #3.)

6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.

Tell FDLs how to do something no one is ever going to bother to do.

7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.

Do the same thing the NRA already does, only half as well at twice the cost.

8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

Do what Underwriters Laboratories already does, only half as well at twice the cost.

9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

Tell the Feds to do their jobs.

10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.

Tell the DOJ to do its job.

11. Nominate an ATF director.

Tell myself to do my job.

12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.

Spend more money.

13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.

Tell everyone to do their goddamned jobs.

14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.

Tell the doctors to figure out why it isn’t the feds’ fault that they aren’t doing their jobs.

15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.

Figure out a way to push “smart guns” that don’t exist and wouldn’t be useful as guns if they did.

16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.

Tell everyone that Obamacare doesn’t actually mean what it says.

17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.

Tell everyone that, seriously, Obamacare doesn’t actually mean that. We had to pass it to find out what was in it, after all.

18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.

Tell everyone that I’ve been a partisan hack for the last month every time I said the NRA was crazy to want to post more cops in schools.

19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.

Do the same thing that every police agency in the country has already done, only half as well and at ten times the cost.

20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.

Tell doctors what they already know.

21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.

Tell people what the parts of Obamacare don’t say anything.

22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.

Tell HHS to do their job.

23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

Hand the rest of the job of telling everyone to do their jobs off to someone else so it is no longer my job.

Rand Paul declares war on Obama’s executive actions on gun control

Sen. Rand Paul has made plans to nullify President Obama’s 23 executive actions on gun control policy, claiming the president is exercising too much power and demonstrating a ‘king complex’.

Gun Owners of America Spokesman: Reagan Only Supported Gun Control in ‘Later Years’

I'm not sure why MSNBC thinks that anyone from an organization that makes the NRA look like moderates deserves to get some air time or to be treated as someone the public should take seriously, but they brought Gun Owners of America's Erich Pratt (son of Larry Pratt) on to bash President Obama after his press conference today calling for sweeping new gun laws.

As Think Progress noted, he decided to dish out a bit of revisionist history on just when St. Ronnie was in support of gun control and as I noted this week, it was before he was president and well before he started exhibiting symptoms of Alzheimer's disease: Reagan Only Supported Gun Control Because He Was Senile, Prominent Gun Advocate Suggests:

As he unveiled his comprehensive package of gun safety regulations on Wednesday afternoon, President Obama urged Americans to stand up to irrational opponents of restrictions on military-style weapons, noting that even President Ronald Reagan supported sensible restrictions on assault weapons. “And by the way, so did Ronald Reagan, one of the staunchest defenders of the Second Amendment, who wrote to Congress in 1994 urging them — this is Ronald Reagan speaking — urging them to listen to the American public and to the law enforcement community and support a ban on the further manufacture of military-style assault weapons,” Obama said.

Asked about Reagan’s position during an appearance on MSNBC shortly after Obama’s remarks, Erich Pratt of Gun Owners of America, suggested that Reagan only supported greater restrictions because he was senile:

ANDREA MITCHELL (HOST): What’s the problem with registering a gun? If you have a bushmaster, first of all, why would you have one?

PRATT: President Reagan owned an AR-15.

MITCHELL: And he supported gun control. He advocated…

PRATT: In his later years. We have to keep that in account.

MITCHELL: In his later years he was almost killed by John Hinckley.

PRATT: But all through his presidency he opposed gun control, that’s my point.

Read on...

Pratt was also defending the NRA's new ad that they decided to double down on today, even though, as Andrea Mitchell noted, it's generally considered off limits to be going after the children of presidents. These groups don't care how low they have to go if it gets their base whipped into a frenzy and protects the gun manufacturers who are funding them.

3D Printed Guns Render Gun Control Moot

guncontrol

Forbes has recently published an article about New York Congressman Steve Israel’s promise to ban 3D printed high capacity ammunition magazines. The congressman’s comments come after Defense Distributed, an open source DIY gunsmith group working to manufacture both guns and their accessories using 3D printing technology, successfully printed and tested a 30-round AR-15 magazine.

Congressman Israel stated:

“Background checks and gun regulations will do little good if criminals can print high-capacity magazines at home. 3-D printing is a new technology that shows great promise, but also requires new guidelines. Law enforcement officials should have the power to stop high-capacity magazines from proliferating with a Google search.”

It seems that Congressman Israel doesn’t realize that background checks and gun regulations both in the United States and just over America’s border with Mexico, already don’t work – without advanced manufacturing and open source paradigms even playing a role. Criminals intent on breaking laws have existed since laws themselves. Additionally, technology like 3D printing, as Forbes correctly points out, will pose a serious challenge to gun control advocates in terms of enforcement. Forbes stated specifically:

“But for either [Congresswoman Diane] Feinstein or Israel’s bill, the same problem arises: How to enforce that prohibition in every garage and workshop in America that houses a 3D printer?”

Of course, without becoming Nazi Germany or Stalin’s Soviet Union, or something far worse, there is no way to enforce these gun regulations. Criminals in particular will continue trumping the law, and because of the government’s refusal to actually tackle the socioeconomic factors driving violence and its insistence on instead punishing law abiding citizens, their authority, legitimacy, and ability to enforce even sensible legislation will be compromised.

And 3D manufacturing isn’t the only way to build your own gun. As a matter of fact, around the world where criminals are unable to buy guns, they do indeed already make their own – and then, as criminals are wanton to do, commit crimes with them, including, murder.

In Thailand, vocational schools are plagued by fierce gang-style rivalries. With standard tools, these students construct homemade guns which they frequently murder each other with. And just this New Year’s Eve, a British tourist was killed when a fight broke out at a party, and a homemade gun was fired. The difference between a Thai vocational education, and say a German or Japanese vocational education is one of culture and socioeconomics – not access to tools.

Image: This homemade handgun was made by an unruly Thai party-goer who claimed the life of a British tourist this New Year’s Eve. Despite the ubiquitous nature of guns, both homemade and manufactured in Thailand, and nearly no means of enforcing whatever legislation may or may not be on the books, gun violence (and violence overall) is still less than in the United States.

….

Preventing people from manufacturing guns, or worse yet, from possessing or using tools that can be used to create guns, is both ludicrous and impossible. Like with cars or anything else, laws are there to ensure we don’t harm others by abusing any given right or implement – not preventing us from having those rights or implements responsibly in the first place. In the end, one must address the factors in any given society that drive large numbers of people to commit violent crimes in the first place – regardless of their chosen means or method.

In reality, an honest public representative would already be far too busy improving education, infrastructure, and the economic prospects of their people to waste time on banning every conceivable implement that could be used in a crime, directly or indirectly. The goal of Congress members like Feinstein or Israel, is not to prevent violence – but to simply disarm the population as the corporate-financier interests they represent seek to be further unhindered as they loot people and nations both abroad and at home.

The fact that the White House is taking such bold actions against “guns,” citing “mass shootings” which account for a fraction of 1% of all homicides, indicates a far more insidious agenda – and one based not on real priorities, but built upon a carefully exploited, emotional campaign to exact an obvious but not forthcoming final goal.

Get Involved.

Defense Distributed has a website – DefCAD.org – and the files for building their various designs available for downloading and use – for free. The files are in .IGS format and require a computer aided design program (CAD) to view them. FreeCAD is an open source, free to download program that works well. This is where, again, a local hackerspace pooling people’s resources together would help infinitely, especially when most hackerspaces come equipped with 3D printers and people capable of operating them and more importantly, capable of teaching you how to use them.

Image: Distributed Defense’s 30 round magazine opened in FreeCAD.

….

Right now, there seems to be only Distributed Defense pursuing this project in any meaningful manner – which should be a cause of concern for anyone who thinks this is a good idea. One group of people working on this alone is a giant, slow-moving target prone to failure from both within and beyond. Many people working on this in parallel, however, presents the same problem the movie and music industry face with file sharing – impossible victory/inevitable defeat.

Starting your own open source “distributed defense” group would be a good way to hedge the risk of having just one group coordinating efforts toward developing open source firearms accessible to all. DefCAD could be infiltrated, co-opted, or derailed in so many conceivable ways considering the implications the work it is doing have, it would be foolish not to hedge such risk.

The lack of direct participation in preserving our rights, and instead depending on lobbyists and protesters alone to to do it for us is one problem. Another problem is the purposeful polarization of the “gun debate” – of gun advocates and their critics along predictable political lines. The Washington Post, which is ironically run by a right-wing Neo-Con editorial board, recently celebrated President Obama’s “clever” use of the Constitution to turn the gun debate on its head. It also noted gleefully that part of the plan was getting the “people” themselves to demand stricter gun control. This will be done by getting half of America (the left) to take the guns away from the other half (the right).

Faux right-wing leaders take particular care in ensuring that to be a “gun rights activist,” you must also be a xenophobic crypto-racist, Islamophobic, and a conservative who believes the problem facing the world are closet-Communist liberals. Likewise, the faux left’s leadership ensures that their followers believe conservatives, their religion, and their guns are the root of all problems. In reality, the corporate-financiers run both sides of the debate and direct the talking points of prominent personalities on both the faux-left and faux-right.

Obviously, instead of digging in and playing along, our goal should be to reach across the aisle and close this artificial divide – by abandoning the leaders claiming to represent our particular political proclivities and working together to address the true causes of violence – social injustice, socioeconomic decay, and inadequate, impractical education.

Getting involved includes creating local institutions that find common ground and reject this artificial polarization – common ground that includes improving education, health care, and local economic prospects, which in turn reduces violence and leaves only responsible people with firearms (and the means to make them). Local efforts must be apolitical and all-inclusive – because if we are reduced to talking politics, it is because we don’t have a pragmatic solution to solve our problems.

DefCAD has a pragmatic solution – leveraging tangible, modern technology to ensure our rights are not trampled upon by insidious politicians. Taking away guns is not an option politically, and soon, not an option practically. All sides who truly seek to reduce the violence in society will be forced to look elsewhere for the solution. Since guns were never the problem to begin with, the advent of 3D printed guns and the insurmountable deterrence they present to “gun control,” may be a blessing in disguise for all who seek a more peaceful and just world.

New York Passes Major Gun Control Law, 104-43

There's such a split in how urban and rural dwellers experience guns. It's probably hard for rural gun supporters to understand just how common it is for city residents to be hit by stray gunfire -- often, when they're home sleeping in their own beds...

New York approves tough gun control law

New York is expected to pass gun control legislation Tuesday that bans military-style rifles and imposes tighter restrictions on ammunition. The bill also brings forth new requirements that will keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.

The bipartisan measure was passed 43-18 by the New York Senate and is expected to pass the Democratic-controlled Assembly early Tuesday afternoon. The measure would be the first gun control bill to pass since the gun massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., which left 26 people dead, 20 of which were first grade children.

“This is a scourge on society,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday night about the shooting. “At what point do you say, ‘No more innocent loss of life.’”

In an attempt to reduce gun violence – especially mass shootings – New York legislators have been working together to impose greater restrictions on the sale of deadly weapons. The new bill further restricts assault weapons by defining them based on a single feature, rather than two features. Under current state law, assault weapons are defined based on having two “military rifle” features, such as a muzzle flash suppressor, a bayonet mount, a pistol grip, or a folding stock. By reducing the qualifications to only one feature, more guns would be considered “assault weapons” and would therefore subject potential buyers to tighter background checks.

New Yorkers would no longer be able to buy assault weapons over the Internet, would be subjected to a background check in order to make a purchase from a private dealer, and would be charged with a misdemeanor for failure to store their weapon safely.

“This is not about taking anyone’s rights away,” said Bronx Sen. Jeffrey Klein. “It’s about a safe society … today we are setting the mark for the rest of the country to do what’s right.”

The new provision also mandates a police registry of all assault weapons. Current owners will be required by law to register such weapons. New York would enter all information into a statewide gun registry, altering the current system in which each county or municipality sets its own standard.

New Yorkers will also be limited to purchasing magazines that carry seven bullets, which is a reduction from the current limit of 10.

To reduce the chance of the mentally ill acquiring weapons, therapists who believe their patients might have intentions to use a gun illegally will be required by law to report this to their mental health director, who will then report it to the state Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Additionally, penalties for gun crimes will be more severe than in the past. Taking a gun to a school, for example, would result in higher sentencing than previously.

Some opponents of tighter gun control regulations believe these measures are unnecessary and in some cases, unconstitutional.

“We have taken an entire category of firearms that are currently legal in the homes of law-abiding, tax-paying citizens. … We are now turning those law-abiding citizens into criminals,” said New York Sen. Greg Ball.

But Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos of Long Island believes the bill’s restrictions will only make the country safer without violating any rights.

“It is well-balanced, it protects the Second Amendment,” he said.

Meanwhile, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has created a gun control proposal that is also expected to soon pass the state legislature.

“There is a sickness in our country. That sickness is gun violence,” O’Malley said Monday at a gun violence summit at Johns Hopkins University. “Perhaps there is no way to completely prevent the next Newtown tragedy. But then again, perhaps there is. None of us can predict the future… And, yet, we know every life is valuable.”

Like Cuomo, O’Malley plans to ban military-style “assault weapons” and limit the size of permitted gun magazines. He would also require tighter background checks and take steps to prevent guns from landing in the hands of the mentally ill.

The two governors have been leading figures in the post-Newtown gun control debate. While New York will most likely become the first in the nation to adopt tighter regulations after last month’s deadly massacre, other states may soon follow in Cuomo’s footsteps.

How About Gun Control for the Pentagon?

U.S. Army Pvt. Adam Eggers shoots his M4 rifle at a live-fire range on Camp Blessing in Kunar province, Afghanistan, July 27, 2009(Photo: U.S. Army Spc. Evan D. Marcy / US Army)“There has to be a national conversation” about gun control, says Nancy Pelosi. The killing of school children and teachers in Newtown, Connecticut and other shootings since have turned up the heat.

If, after Newtown, it’s all talk and no action, the former House Speaker said this week, “it’ll amount to a dereliction of duty on the part of us in public office.”

Too right. Pelosi wants to see action. The president’s demanding it too. So are state leaders. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has his sights set on the presidency (if you’ll excuse the expression), has proposed not only rewriting the state’s existing assault weapons ban but also more expansive mental health checks and background checks of gun buyers, lower limits on how many bullets a single gun magazine can fire and a new requirement that gun buyers be periodically recertified.

At the level of congress and the states, all sights (if you’ll excuse the expression again) are set on gun control. State district attorneys are joining the call for reform and almost 100 lawmakers have signed onto a proposal to limit handgun purchases to just one gun a month. (Apparently one a month is too strict a diet for the other 435.)

There’s just one piece of the picture missing. Now that lawmakers, DAs, governors and the White House have all agreed that gun violence is wrong, when are we going to start talking about troops and bombs and drones? You think American weapons are a problem in the US? Take a look at what American weapons are dong outside the country.

In Newtown, shooter Adam Lanza's weapons killed twenty kids, six teachers and his mom and shocked the nation. As Robert Dreyfuss recently pointed out here, American weapons have killed hundreds, probably thousands of kids in Afghanistan. In that one country alone, all sorts of people have US weapons. (The sales are good for the US economy, even if the weapons are used with some regularity against Americans.) Afghan soldiers carry US guns. So do some of the former Mujahadeen “freedom fighters” the Army’s up against. (The United States sold them guns when the freedom they were fighting for was from Soviet, rather than US occupation.)

US troops carry US guns too, of course. Last March, an army sergeant used his to methodically slaughter sixteen civilians, including at least nine kids in their homes in southern Afghanistan one Sunday morning.

And then there are those drones. Seven drone attacks in the last two weeks have killed an estimated forty people in Pakistan and Yemen so far this year and we're not even half way through January. The Bureau of Investigative Journalism reports that from June 2004 through mid-September 2012, drone strikes killed 474-881 civilians, including 176 children.

For all the droning on about violence, it would be good to hear someone drone on just a bit about drones.

The good news is surely this. We’re finally taking aim at gun violence (as the headline writers say). The powerful gun lobby the National Rifle Association has taken some hits. Thanks to Lee Fang, we know all about their corporate backers, and NRA President Wayne LaPierre came in for no end of grief when he finally broke his post-Newtwon silence and suggested stationing more shooters in more schools. Arm schools to protect schools? Ridiculous.

Except that's exactly US foreign policy. The NRA works for its corporate partners no harder than the State Department works for theirs. US government-brokered arms sales tripled to a record high in 2011: $66.43 billion dollars, more than three-quarters of the global arms market, driven by major arms deals with Persian Gulf states. For all the talk of background checks stateside, when the US approved a $30 billion deal with the authoritarian state of Saudi Arabia, it wasn’t the background, only the size of the check that got much attention. (President Obama said the sale would be good for jobs and the State Department said that in such an insecure region, the arms deal would be good for sercurity.) And when was the last time we periodically recertified Israel?

The United States last year did its best to keep ammunition out of a new treaty on small arms, and the Land of the Free won’t even sign the international ban on land-mines. If the president really wants action on high-capacity killing, how about a deal: gun owners give up Bushmasters when the US agrees absolutely to ban cluster bombs?

It may be I’m getting ahead of myself. Perhaps we should aim a little lower. One step at a time. Set our sights on just one handgun a month. And how about just one shooting metaphor? At least that would be a start.

Right Wingers Attack New Miss America over Gun Control Answer

On Saturday, beauty pageant contestants learned that if she gives a thoughtful answer on gun control during a high profile pageant--she will be vilified for it. Here's what the New Miss America, Mallory Hytes Hagan of New York, said about the issue.

Champion: Good evening, Miss New York. In the wake of the Newtown tragedy, there is a lot of talk about gun control. One solution being proposed is an armed guard in every school. Do you think that would make our schools safer?

Hagan : I don’t think the proper way to fight violence is with violence. I think the proper way is to educate people on guns and the ways that we can use them properly. We can lock them up, we can have gun safety classes, we can have a longer waiting period. The answer is not to fight violence with violence, however.

The response from the winguttia was swift.

The conservative Media Research Center (MRC) blasted her answer, writing that she was “espousing liberal conventional wisdom on guns” while ridiculing her for supposedly suggesting that “law enforcement officers carrying guns fuels violence.”

Commenters on MRC’s website agreed:- “That idiot answer only reinforces the dumb blond stereotype”
- “The girl is cute, but she lives in a bubble like her head.”
- “this girl is f-ing stupid”
- “More idiocy from people who know nothing about guns”Conservative activists on the far-right Free Republic website condemned Hagan:- “So Mallory Hagan rather the victims get killed than fight back? She belongs in the UK (with Piers Morgan) not America.”
- “She got the looks, but I think she missed the brains line.”
- “Spoken like a true libtard.”

I'm sure more negative responses will forthcoming.

Malkin’s Hate-Filled Plea For Thoughtful Discussion On Gun Control

Michelle Malkin employed her special brand of fire-breathing derision on Fox & Friends this morning where, without a trace of irony, she attacked the Obama administration for not having a thoughtful, “deliberative” discussion on gun control. In an effort to bolster her case, she lobbed a barrage of inflammatory and untruthful sound bites about the Obama administration’s intentions. The hosts listened approvingly without challenge. Meanwhile, they ignored the kinds of unhinged responses from the right such as the Tactical Response CEO who threatened to start shooting people if President Obama "goes one inch further" with gun control measures.

Steve Doocy set the tone as he introduced the discussion by saying, “Yesterday, we heard from Sheriff Joe Biden.” “Sheriff Joe Biden” was displayed often in a banner on the screen. Doocy added that Biden “sounds like he wants to have the president use an executive order to do something to clamp down on guns. What do you think about this?”

Malkin’s contempt was cued up:

Well, if you thought the last four years showed how little disregard this administration has for the deliberative process, you ain’t seen nothing yet! And that cheesy grin that Joe Biden just can’t wipe off his face (said seconds after a sneering grin of her own), even when he’s talking about something as dire and as grave and serious as this particular issue. It gives me the chills because that impetus to do something, anything without the kind of reflection that we need on these kind of issues is very dangerous.

But, naturally, “reflection” and “deliberative process” are for other people, not the “fair and balanced” Fox News. Why look for facts when you can make incendiary guesses? Brian Kilmeade wondered if President Obama could issue a unilateral order, “No more assault weapons.”

Malkin “thoughtfully” responded:

Why the heck not? This administration has used the executive order and administrative fiat to completely undermine and sabotage our immigration policy, for example. They’ve done so many things by executive order on the environment that are radical shifts from where most Americans are.

Um, not really. Polls have consistently shown that Americans approve of and trust President Obama on the environment. A recent poll shows Americans think climate change is a serious problem and only 45% think he will take “major steps” to combat it.

Not that anyone corrected Malkin. All three hosts were a vision of credulousness as Malkin went on to sneer, “What’s most dangerous is the way that they couch their rhetoric in what seems to be moderation.” Rolling her eyes with scorn, she added, “Right now, they’re talking about ‘gun safety’ instead of ‘gun control.’ And when they harp about ‘assault weapons’ or ‘ammunition,’ what they’re really talking about – and we have had this kind of candor before from the gun grabbers – is talking about the kind of handguns that ordinary Americans use to protect themselves!”

Doocy said admiringly, “Sure, exactly.”

But according to the New York Times – which bothered to do some real investigation and reporting - Malkin and Kilmeade were way off base in their suggestion that the Obama administration is about to take some unilateral action to confiscate ordinary citizens’ guns: “Most changes to the current system, which allows easy access to weapons with hugely destructive power, has to come through legislation,” reporter David Firestone noted. Unlike the Curvy Couch Crew, he pointed out that Republicans have signaled that they will block “most of President Obama’s plans.”

So what are President Obama’s options? The Times offers up concrete possibilities, instead of off-hand theories:

Perhaps most importantly, he can strengthen the database that the F.B.I. uses to perform background checks on gun buyers. Many federal agencies that don’t currently contribute to the database, such as the Social Security Administration, have access to mental competence information about prospective buyers, or details about failed drug tests and other issues that might prevent a sale to the wrong person. Through an order, the president can get these agencies to share more information with the F.B.I.. As Charlie Savage of The Times recently reported, the Justice Department has studied several similar ideas to improve the background-check system, most of which have been shelved.

The president could also demand that the states share more information from their crime and mental-health databases.

This is hardly the kind of gun-seizing, power-grabbing maneuver that Malkin and her like-minded hosts were trying to scare viewers into believing is afoot. But don't expect these facts to replace paranoid fear mongering any time soon on Fox. Do expect the kind of rhetoric that paints President Obama as a dangerous dictator and that people like the Tactical Response CEO feed off.

Fox News’ Answer to Gun Control: Gun Appreciation Day!

Someone should do a mental health check on Roger Ailes before letting him do any more damage. It's not bad enough that the Fox News anchors have gone utterly crazy over Joe Biden's declaration that executive orders could well be part of a package of gun control measures, but now we have Fox touting a gun owners' coalition putting on Gun Appreciation Day on January 19th.

These people have some serious obsessions with weapons of human destruction. Gun appreciation ranks right up there with worshipping at the drone altar as something I would not be caught dead doing.

According to the Fox News website, "the coalition behind the gun appreciation day includes the Second Amendment Foundation, Special Operations Speaks, Revolution PAC and the Conservative Action Fund." They're a bit hot under the collar and shaking their fists with threats:

“We need to ban politicians who assault our rights, not firearms that are used thousands of times a day to protect lives and property from criminal attack,” said Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation and chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

I decided to have a look at these organizations a bit more closely, given that I was sure they were "educating the public about conservative values like liberty and gun ownership." If I had a quarter for every time I've read that phrase in federal disclosures lately, I'd be wealthy beyond belief.

The Second Amendment Foundation

The Second Amendment Foundation had an interesting disclosure buried on the back pages. It seems they have nearly $1.5 million invested in "radio and TV station ownership" and an internet media website. Like Glenn Beck's outfit, maybe?

Screen Shot 2013-01-09 at 9.57.07 PM.png

That's sort of scary, don't you think? No wonder we can't have nice things, when gun nuts own media? Here's the list of what they own. Each station is owned 50 percent by this foundation.

  • KSRN Radio, Inc. Bellevue, Washington
  • KITZ Radio, Inc, Bellevue, Washington
  • KBNP Radio, Inc, Bellevue, Washington

KBNP Radio seems to be the big money maker, with around $135,000 in income for 2011. It's billed as The Money Station, and features Bruce Williams and Lou Dobbs as the big names, with a lot of money tips in between. Awesome that they can send all that free advertising for gun appreciation over to the radio stations.

KITZ Radio is all talk, presumably all right wing talk. KBNP is another Money Station, but it broadcasts in the Portland, Oregon market.

The SAF is the brain child of Alan Gottlieb, shown above in an interview with Bill O'Reilly. He also runs the radio stations.

Special Operations Speaks

This is a far right PAC led by Retired Brigadier General Joe Stringham, who has an interesting past. Via the Center for Public Integrity:

By 1993, the company was active in Angola, providing aerial surveillance operations to oil companies. AirScan’s mission is to patrol oil pipelines and installations to detect and counter guerilla activity by the secessionist Front for the Liberation of Cabinda (FLEC) and by UNITA forces.

AirScan’s commander in Angola was U.S. Brigadier General Joe Stringham, a decorated Special Forces veteran who commanded U.S. military advisors engaged in the unacknowledged war in El Salvador.

Revolution PAC

RevolutionPAC is run by Dan Backer and Lawrence Hunter, PhD. From their "

Dr. Hunter was a White House policy advisor to President Ronald Reagan. He was also Chief Economist and political advisor for Jack Kemp at Empower America between 1996 and 2005. During the 1996 presidential campaign, he served as a member of Senator Bob Dole’s Task Force on Tax Reduction and Tax Reform and on the National Commission on Economic Growth and Tax Reform. He currently serves as a member of the Advisory Board of "Gold Standard 2012," the monetary reform initiative of American Principles in Action (APIA).

Revolution PAC was created to help Ron Paul's bid for the presidency. Now it's joining the parade to worship guns! Yeeeeha.

Finally, the Conservative Action Fund is exactly what the name implies. Their next event according to their website, gun worship day notwithstanding, is an evening with Ann Coulter.

There you go. The groups are lining up to worship AR 15s even as I write, I'm sure. Because you know, there's nothing quite as warm and comforting as a gun in your hand and another on the altar.

Body armor optional, I'm sure.

Jon Stewart Lays Into the Right for Opposition to Gun Control and Fear of...

Jon Stewart was still on fire his second night back from vacation, despite having some trouble with his voice due to a cold and he laid into the right for their staunch opposition to any new regulations or form of gun control, even though we're constantly hearing them say that "everything should be on the table" to deal with the problem.

No one was spared from NRA head Wayne LaPierre, to Fox News, to GOP politicians to you name it. After playing some footage of Fox "news" and wingnut Glenn Beck and their fearmongering on the topic, Stewart pulled out an assault rifle on the set in reaction:

STEWART: I'm not sure what happened. I'm sorry. I blacked out in the middle of that and woke up with an AK in my... I don't know... or whatever this is. I'm sure I'll get letters about what this really is, which is plastic is what it really is.

It was nice to see him get in a not so thinly veiled swipe at the wingnuts who went crazy after David Gregory held up something that appeared to be a magazine on the set of Meet the Press. There is a mile long list of why I'd like to see Gregory off of the air, but that stupidity isn't one of them.

Stewart got a shot in on LaPierre for his solution to the problem with our mental health system failing us not doing anything to actually improve taking care of those with mental health problems, but a national database of the "lunatics" out there instead. After asking what someone might have to do to be added to that list, Stewart recommended that LaPierre be put on it for this:

LAPIERRE: Americans, don't want to be added to that pile of dead people that have been left defenseless by the U.N. policies.

STEWART: LaPierre with two r's is a run.

Next up was HuckaJesus saying we don't have a gun problem, but a sin problem instead, to which Stewart responded that he didn't realize that his masturbating had risen to the level of a national crisis. He wrapped up the first segment with Fox's Eric Bolling saying it's not the right time to talk about gun control and that he'd have to wait until the next segment to continue his conversation about it.

In part two, Stewart did a great job talking about all of the other things we are willing to regulate in the United States other than guns, and the list of reasons we're given by the politicians and the talking heads for not regulating them, along with all of the legislation that's been passed to make sure that the gun manufacturers are never held liable for their products, unlike every other industry out there which manufacturers products which might harm or kill people.

After playing some of wingnut Rep. Louie Goehmert's response to that, where he said that hammers could be outlawed under the assault weapons ban because they kill massive numbers of people just like guns do, Stewart got his knocks in on him as well:

STEWART: Okay, if you want to regulate hammers, we could try that. Would it be possible also to regulate bags of hammers, or anyone as dumb as that?

After laying into all of them for their lack of common sense to even consider any form of gun control, Stewart got to the real problem with the debate out there, which is the wingnuts like the guy Fox decided to give some air time to, who was comparing Democrats to the Third Reich over a potential assault weapons ban that hasn't happened yet. And then we've got the publicity hound that CNN should have never given an ounce or air time to, Alex Jones and his little stunt this week to get himself some attention on Piers Morgan's show.

Stewart wrapped things up by stating the obvious about how that type of fearmongering is really driving the lack of a rational debate about our gun laws and regulations.

STEWART: No one's taking away all the guns. But now I get it. Now I see what’s happening. So this is what it is. Their paranoid fear of a possible dystopic future prevents us from addressing our actual dystopic present. We can't even begin to address 30,000 gun deaths that are actually, in reality, happening in this country every year because a few of us must remain vigilant against the rise of imaginary Hitler.

New York Moves to Enact Tougher Controls on Guns

New York State is nearing agreement on a proposal to put what would be some of the nation’s strictest gun-control laws into effect, including what Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo vowed on Wednesday would be an ironclad ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, and new measures to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and mentally ill people.

Lawmakers in Albany, seeking to send a message to the nation that the recent mass shootings demand swift action, say they hope to vote on the package of legislation as soon as next week.

The Assembly speaker, Sheldon Silver, a Manhattan Democrat, told reporters on Wednesday that Mr. Cuomo and legislative leaders were “95 percent” of the way toward an agreement. Senate Republicans, considered the only possible obstacle to the governor’s proposal, indicated they did not intend to block a deal.

“When you hear about these issues all across the nation, whether it’s in the movie theater in Aurora, Colo., or Columbine, something needs to happen — something transformative,” said Senator Timothy M. Kennedy, a Democrat from Buffalo.

The dash to enact new gun controls made New York the first flash point in the battles over firearm restrictions that are expected to consume several state capitals this year.

But the debate also raged elsewhere on Wednesday, from Denver, where supporters of gun rights rallied to oppose weapon restrictions in the new legislative session, to Connecticut, whose governor, Dannel P. Malloy, in an emotional speech to lawmakers — he lost his composure talking about the mass killings at a Newtown elementary school last month — said, “More guns are not the answer.”

At the White House, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. met with gun-control advocates and said the Obama administration planned both to pass legislation and to use executive orders to try to reduce gun violence. “The president and I are determined to take action,” Mr. Biden said. “This is not an exercise in photo opportunities.”

Mr. Cuomo’s aides said the proposed legislation in New York would expand the definition of what is considered an assault weapon to match California’s law, currently the most restrictive in the nation. But the overall package would go further, they said, by limiting detachable ammunition magazines to 7 rounds from the current 10, and requiring background checks for purchases of ammunition, not just weapons.

Limiting magazines to seven rounds would give New York the toughest restrictions in the nation. Only around half a dozen states currently limit the size of magazines, and most of them allow magazines that contain up to 10 rounds, according to a survey by the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which advocates gun control. The New York law would also close a loophole that has thwarted enforcement of limits on the size of magazines.

Even as Mr. Cuomo detailed his plans, gun-rights groups mobilized to oppose the new restrictions.

“We fully expect that New York state’s gun owners will be completely engaged in this debate and N.R.A. will be there to lead them,” said Chris W. Cox, the chief lobbyist for the National Rifle Association, which has donated more money to state politicians in New York than anywhere else, much of it to Senate Republicans.

And immediately afterward, Budd Schroeder, the chairman of the Shooters Committee on Political Education, a New York gun-rights group, said he planned to meet with every state senator he knew to ask them to stand up to the governor.

“The legislators are going to be getting a lot of phone calls in their district offices,” Mr. Schroeder said. “How is taking away my rights to own any type of firearm I choose going to change the attitude of a criminal?”

Yet Mr. Schroeder’s group, on its Web site, acknowledged the challenging terrain. “We can say with certainty,” it warned, “that anything short of overwhelming our legislators with calls, e-mails and letters, we have virtually no chance.”

Mr. Cuomo’s initiative drew praise from Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who has made gun control his signature cause. “I was particularly struck by his passionate leadership on gun violence,” Mr. Bloomberg said in a statement. “New York State has led the nation with strong, common-sense gun laws, and the governor’s new proposals will build on that tradition.”

Mr. Cuomo is a possible 2016 presidential contender who is seeking to elevate his stature among Democrats base nationally, after a much-praised victory on same-sex marriage in his first year in office. His push for enhanced gun control even drew praise from Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York, in a letter that otherwise criticized Mr. Cuomo’s support for abortion rights.

Mr. Cuomo had already stirred up anxiety among gun rights groups by saying in a radio interview in December that “confiscation could be an option” for existing assault weapons.

But on Wednesday, Mr. Cuomo backed away from that statement. “This is not about taking away people’s guns,” he said in his State of the State address. “It is about ending the unnecessary risk of high-capacity assault rifles. That’s what this is about.”

The expectation from Senator Dean G. Skelos, the Republican leader, and his aides that the gun-control legislation would come to the Senate floor for a vote is significant; Senate Republicans have consistently rebuffed efforts by Democrats to pass more restrictive gun laws.

But Republicans now have partial control of the chamber because of a coalition they recently established to share power with a group of dissident Democrats who favor more gun control. And Democrats believe that Republican leaders would rather accept a deal than jeopardize their warm relationship with Mr. Cuomo or risk a public relations backlash.

Many Senate Republicans sought re-election in part by touting their bond with the governor, who remains popular with Republican voters as well as with Democrats; Mr. Cuomo, recognizing the extent of his political power, has vowed to travel the state blaming Senate Republicans if they do not back his efforts for gun control.

The gun-control debate had already flared up in other ways in New York State since the shootings last month in Newtown and in Webster, N.Y., where two firefighters were killed. A newspaper’s publication of a map showing the names and addresses of gun owners in suburban Westchester and Rockland Counties set off a wave of threats against and harassment of the paper’s employees.

In his State of the State address Wednesday, the governor told lawmakers it was their duty to “stop the madness” of violence.

“Forget the extremists — it’s simple,” Mr. Cuomo said to a crescendo of applause. “No one hunts with an assault rifle. No one needs 10 bullets to kill a deer.”

Report: DHS Attempting to “Control How Much Ammo is Available On the Commercial Market”

Last year, when the state of Illinois attempted to follow New Jersey by making it difficult and more expensive to acquire ammunition, we warned that new government initiatives would be used to try and circumvent the Second Amendment. Rather than targeting firearms directly, lawmakers and government security officials began looking to ammunition as a sure-fire way to disarm Americans.

While it may have been hard to believe then, given the current shortages of ammunition throughout the United States, one can’t ignore the fact that the Department of Homeland Security has been actively pursuing such a strategy.

“The Department of Homeland Security’s huge ammo purchases were an attempt to dry up supplies as part of an end run around the second amendment,” writes Paul Joseph Watson of the 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition purchased by the Department of Homeland Security.

A US-based weapons manufacturer and defense contractor recently confirmed that this is, in fact, part of a broader gun control plan when he shared his insider knowledge with well known talk radio show host Michael Savage:

What Homeland Security is doing here is they’re issuing a contract to buy up to that amount of ammo if they want it…

It’s a way to control the amount of market that’s available on the commercial market at any time.

If they go to the ammo manufacturers and say give me 50 million rounds, give me another 30 million rounds… if they periodically do this in increments, they’re going to control how much ammo is available on the commercial market.

As part of their contract it stipulates in there that when the government calls and says give us another quantity, that everything they make has to go to the government priority one before any of it goes to the commercial market.

So, if  they get nervous, all they have to do is use that contract that they have in place… and they just say ‘give us some more.’

In the contracting world it’s called an IDIQ contract… Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity… By issuing these contracts the government gets priority. All they have to do is call up…

Video: Michael Savage interviews weapons manufacturer (via Infowars):

High demand for firearms (and thus ammunition) resulting from threats of a nationwide Congressional gun grab, coupled with tens of millions of rounds ordered every month by non-military domestic security agencies has driven prices for some types of ammunition up over 100% in just the last six months.

But it doesn’t stop there, as the government is also reportedly trying to restrict access in other ways:

In fact, the ATF and the State Department, they’re kind of jerking around with the importation of it too, so they’re making it difficult for it to come in from overseas.

Right now, all the domestic manufacturers are running at full speed. They’re running three shifts, they’re cranking it out as fast as they can.

Supply cannot keep up with demand.

For the time being, demand is making it difficult to acquire ammunition at a reasonable price, but it is still available if you’re willing to pay for it.

Should DHS and other Federal Agencies continue to pursue this strategy, however, they could very well monopolize all domestically produced ammunition.

With budgets in the hundreds of billions of dollars, the government can easily utilize taxpayer funds to continue purchasing ammunition in an effort to keep it out of the hands of the American people.

And if that doesn’t work, any domestic emergency, temporary or long-term, would give government agencies confiscatory powers over this industry altogether, as authorized by the Doomsday Executive Order recently signed by President Obama.

Perhaps it’s time ammunition manufacturers follow the lead of firearms producers and simply refuse to sell to government agencies.

Machine Guns on the Vegas Strip? In Nevada, ALEC/NRA Bill Introduced to Stop Cities...

A Nevada politician has introduced a bill that would bar the city of Las Vegas from enacting tougher gun laws than the state as a whole, including language that would specifically protect "machine guns" from being barred on the Las Vegas strip if the state did not bar machine guns across the state. At the last known meeting of the "Public Safety and Elections Task Force" of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a lobbyist for the National Rifle Association proposed amendments to the ALEC "Consistency in Firearms Regulation Act" to add "machine guns" to ALEC's model bill prohibiting local governments from adopting different rules for guns and ammo than a state has as a whole. On March 18, a Nevada state legislator introduced a bill in the statehouse that is almost a word-for-word copy from that ALEC bill, which ALEC has since attempted to distance itself from while doing nothing to stop or repeal such bills.

Nevada Assembly Bill 340 is nearly identical to a version of the ALEC Consistency in Firearms Regulation Act, which was most recently ratified by the ALEC gun task force in late 2011. Here is a sample:

NV AB 340 ALEC side-by-side

NV ALEC firearm def side by side

A complete side-by-side can be viewed here.

Blocking Cities from Barring "Machine Guns" and Cop-Killer Bullets?

The Consistency in Firearms Regulation Act has been an ALEC "model bill" since at least 1995. It is a form of state pre-emption legislation prohibiting local units of government -- cities, counties, or municipalities -- from regulating or banning guns in their communities in any way that is tougher or different than the state as a whole. Such legislation would largely permit legislators from a state's rural areas to trump city efforts to impose tougher gun rules. The bill also prohibits local governments from bringing lawsuits against gun and ammunition manufacturers. Local control has traditionally been regarded as a "conservative" principle, but ALEC has a number of state preemption bills to prohibit communities from protecting their own health and welfare -- see, for example, ALEC-led efforts to prohibit locally-owned internet.

Versions of the ALEC/NRA Consistency in Firearms Regulation Act have passed in at least 38 states.

At ALEC's December 2011 States & Nation Policy Summit in Arizona, the NRA brought to ALEC a new set of amendments to the model bill that would, according to the amendment language, specifically ban cities from prohibiting "machine guns" and "submachine guns," as well as prohibit local governments from regulating the sale of ammunition (with no exception for armor piercing ammo or other particularly deadly ammunition), or accessories like high-capacity clips. The bill also gives private individuals the right to sue if they believe a local government rule, regulation, or ordinance violates the state law.

It is not clear why the NRA felt emboldened to add this broader language in 2011, when it had not included the language in the initial 1995 proposal, and did not add it when it was reaffirmed in 1999 (when Koch Industries chaired ALEC's Private Enterprise Board).

The NRA's proposed amendments were approved "unanimously" by the ALEC Public Safety and Elections Task Force on December 2, 2011, according to the minutes of the meeting. Most of these amendments are echoed nearly word-for-word in Nevada's proposed AB 340 -- from the new statement of purpose, to the definitions of firearms and ammunition, to provisions for a private right of action.

Despite PR Stunts, ALEC Bills Continue to Spread

In the wake of controversy over its role in promoting NRA-sponsored "Stand Your Ground" laws similar to the one initially cited to protect Trayvon Martin's killer from arrest, ALECannounced it was disbanding the Public Safety and Elections Task Force in April 2012.

Despite this PR maneuver, at ALEC's annual meeting at Salt Lake City in summer 2012, the NRA had the biggest booth in ALEC's convention hall and continued to host its annual shooting event for ALEC legislators and lobbyists, with guns, ammo, and barbecue provided. The July 2012 event was co-sponsored by Browning Arms Company, whose foreign parent company is one of the world's largest sellers of machine guns, as noted by CMD in its coverage of ALEC's convention.

Last week, ALEC pulled another PR stunt to try to repair its image. It is trying to disavow bills it has promoted for years -- like the "Stand Your Ground" (also known as the Castle Doctrine bill or the Shoot First law) and the Consistency in Firearms Regulation Act -- and for the first time in its forty year history, is posting some of its model bills on its website. ALEC's new spokesperson Bill Meierling has claimed that "If it is not on our website, it is not our policy."

Despite what ALEC says publicly, ALEC bills like the Consistency in Firearms Regulation Act continue to spread across the country, without regard for whether ALEC has chosen to post the legislation on its website. And the Consistency in Firearms Regulation Act and hundreds of other ALEC bills, such as Stand Your Ground and Voter ID, remain on the books in states across the country, and continue to adversely affect the lives of numerous Americans. Meanwhile, ALEC has taken no apparent steps to repeal ill-conceived laws that were adopted at its behest or to oppose bills like Nevada's bill to thwart any future efforts to keep machine guns off the Las Vegas strip. ALEC zombie legislation it embraced for years, if not decades, continues to live on unchanged and unchallenged by ALEC's effort to whitewash its record.

Look: Yoko Ono’s Anti-Gun Tweets Include Photo of John Lennon’s Bloody Glasses

In a plea to end gun violence, Yoko Ono has tweeted a powerful picture showing blood on the glasses that John Lennon was wearing when he was shot to death in New York City on Dec. 8, 1980.

Since that day, the text above the photo reads, more than 1,057,000 people have been killed by gun violence in the U.S.

The 80-year-old widow of the former Beatle included the photo in a series of anti-gun tweets Thursday, a day after what would have been the couple’s 44th wedding anniversary.

The Guardian:

Ono tweeted the image a further three times, with the messages: “31,537 people are killed by guns in the USA every year. We are turning this beautiful country into war zone”; “Together, let’s bring back America, the green land of peace”; and finally, “The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience. After 33 years our son Sean and I still miss him. Yoko Ono Lennon”.

Ono has been a political activist for decades, but her contribution to the gun control debate is notable in the aftermath of the shooting in December last year in which 20 young children were killed at a primary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

On the News With Thom Hartmann: The Bill Meant to Strengthen Gun Regulations Could...

In today's On the News segment: The bill the Senate is voting on next month to strengthen gun regulations could turn into one that actually enhances guns rights; nearly every state in our nation has reduced funding for public universities; the Westboro Baptist Church has a new neighbor; and more.

TRANSCRIPT:

Thom Hartmann here – on the news...

You need to know this. Next month, the Senate will vote on gun control legislation, but provisions that the majority of voters support won't be in the bill. Yesterday, California Senator Diane Feinstein's assault weapons ban was pulled from the legislation, despite a Pew Research poll showing 55% of Americans support the ban. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he will allow the weapons ban to be offered as an amendment, but he will only introduce one measure, which increases the charges and penalties for gun trafficking. As Republicans would mount fierce opposition to the ban on military-style weapons, Mr. Reid said he felt sympathy for Diane Feinstein, but that her bill did not have the 60 votes needed to prevent a filibuster. The final bill may also include provisions to strengthen background checks, but it could be weighed down with pro-gun amendments from the other side of the isle. According to the New York Times, if that happens, the bill meant to strengthen gun regulations could turn into one that actually enhances guns rights. In an interview with reporters, Feinstein said, "How many assault weapons do you need circulating? To have these mass killings is such a blight on everything that America stands for." So, the gun lobby wins again, and modest legislation, which would help keep military-style weapons out of criminals' hands, can't even be put up for a vote. The American people deserve to know which side their representatives stand on. Either Senators are with the majority of Americans that want these weapons off the street, or their with the gun lobby. As President Obama said in his State of the Union, "they deserve a vote," and now is the time for that vote to happen.

In screwed news... In the five years since the 2008 financial meltdown, nearly every state in our nation has reduced funding for public universities. According to a new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, only North Dakota and Wyoming are investing in our future leaders at the same level they were before the Great Recession. The Think Progress Blog points out that some states have made these drastic cuts to education funding only to preserve tax breaks, leaving students on the hook for the skyrocketing tuition costs. Students in Arizona have been hit the hardest, with a 78% increase in college costs just since 2008 – all to preserve a $538 million corporate tax break enacted in 2011. So, while corporations in that state enjoy a 4.9% tax rate, students suffer with closed campuses, eliminated courses, inadequate school resources, and they pay nearly double the cost to obtain a degree. This is immoral... and extremely unwise. Our nation is 16th in the world at educating our future leaders, and huge cuts and ballooning tuition costs will only push us down further on that list. We must start investing in an educated workforce. If we're supposed to be the greatest country in the world, why don't we guarantee the right to a world-class education? This has to change.

In the best of the rest of the news...

Senator Elizabeth Warren is a warrior for the middle class. And in between taking on the banksters, and calling Republicans out for the pro-1% policies, Warren is also working on a book to document the battles she's fought on behalf of working people of our nation. In an interview with the Associate Press on Tuesday, Sen. Warren said the new book, called "Rigged," will tell the story of her time on a Congressional Oversight Panel, how she helped set up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and how she ran a successful senate campaign to defeat Scott Brown. Warren said, "the title refers to how the economic system is too often rigged against families that work hard and play by the rules. The story is national, but it's also personal." Leave it to Senator Elizabeth Warren... not only does she fight everyday for the middle class, but manages to find time to document the story.

Next time you hear the Republican talking point about the U.S. having the highest corporate tax rate in the world, remember this: In 2012, some of our nation's largest corporations actually got huge refunds. For instance, General Electric made $81 billion dollars in profits last year, yet received a whopping $3 billion dollar tax refund. Bank of America is another tax-dodger, as the company earned over $75 billion last year, yet wrote off so many legal settlements the company was eligible for a tax refund of over $1 billion. It is a privilege to do business in our nation, and to make huge profits off of hard-working American citizens, yet we're actually paying corporations to be here. If Republicans are so worried about the debt and the deficit, they should be putting an end to this corporate welfare. If companies want to use our commons to make huge profits off our fellow citizens, let's demand they start paying their fair share.

And finally... The Westboro Baptist Church has a new neighbor. About six months ago, Aaron Jackson, a founding member of a charity organization called Planting Peace, bought the house directly across the street from the anti-gay group. The purchase is part of a new nonprofit he calls "Equality House." Mr. Jackson found out the house while playing around on Google Earth, and was struck with a brilliant idea. He said that as soon as he saw it was for sale he thought, "Oh my gosh, I could buy a house in front of the [Westboro Baptist Chuch]! And I'm going to paint that thing the color of the pride flag." And yesterday, that's exactly what he did. Out front of the newly-painted rainbow exterior, Mr. Jackson also flies the pride flag, and he is already working on the next steps in his fight for LGBT equality. Congrats to Aaron Jackson for standing up to Fred Phelps and his homophobic, hate group. In the words of Jesus, "love thy neighbor, as thy self." I wonder if that includes neighbors living in a rainbow covered house...

And that's the way it is today – Wednesday, March 20, 2013. I'm Thom Hartmann – on the news.

US child punished for making pastry gun

This 7-year-old second grader was suspended from a US school for chewing his pastry into a gun shape.

A 7-year-old US pupil has been suspended from his elementary school for nibbling his breakfast pastry into the shape of a gun while firearm sales and shootings continue across the country unabated.

Father of the second-grade student filed a formal appeal on Thursday with the superintendent of Anne Arundel County school district near the US capital on Thursday, asking that his child’s school records be wiped clean of the offense, The Washington Post reports Friday.

“The chewed pastry was not capable of harming anybody, even if thrown,” said the appeal, addressed to the superintendent, Kevin Maxwell and Park Elementary School Principal Sandy Blondell. “It could not fire any missile whatsoever.”

The case, which has attracted national attention, came just 11 weeks after the shooting carnage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the US state of Connecticut, were 20 children and six staff members were killed by a lone gunman armed with an assault rifle.

Sensitivities over the massacre have been variously heightened concerning guns and security, “even imaginary ones,” the report says.

In recent weeks, according to the daily, children have been suspended from school “for pointing their fingers like guns and, in one case, for talking about shooting a Hello Kitty gun that blows bubbles.”

In some cases, it adds, the offenses were described in harsh terms, one as a “terroristic threat,” as school authorities have reportedly agreed, after appeals, to clear students’ permanent records.

In the Anne Arundel school case, the child was suspended March 1 for two days after chewing his breakfast pastry bar and yelling, “Look I made a gun,” according to the appeal. He aimed the pastry at students in a hallway and those at nearby desks, the appeal said.

“It was harmless,” his father said in his appeal. “It was a danish.”

The harsh treatment of school children for their playful activities, which widely reflect what they witness daily on television and news, comes as US adults are widely reported to continue purchasing guns in public gun shows and elsewhere across the country.

Meanwhile, federal officials have so far failed to agree on any national gun-control laws following the Connecticut school massacre.

‘Turkish gun sales boom in US’

Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the US.

A large number of Americans have rushed to purchase the Turkish-made firearms as gun control restrictions loom in the country.

The Turkish defense and aerospace industry has amplified its sales of guns and industrial goods sold to the United States for the months of January and February this year, a 5.6 percent mark-up since the same period last year, reported Hurriyet Daily News.

“Turkey could easily achieve its USD 25 billion arms trade target by 2023, with five or six Turkish companies ranking among the top 100 arms companies,” said Aral Alis, chairman of the Union of Defense and Aerospace Industry Exporters, earlier this week.

America has become the top market for Turkish firearms, motivated by potential gun control measures initiated by US President Barack Obama.

Following the Newtown shooting spree, Obama appointed Biden to lead an effort to find proposals "to reduce the epidemic of gun violence.”

On December 14, 2012, a 20-year-old man, identified as Adam Lanza, killed twenty children and six adults before pointing the gun at himself at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

There have been several deadly shootings across the United States over the past few months, putting the issue of lax gun control laws back in the spotlight.

Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the US.

The US averages 87 gun deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.

The year 2012 has been a record-setting year for gun sales in the US.

About 4.5 million firearms are sold annually in the United States at a cost of 2 to 3 billion dollars.

Zero Tolerance: High School Student Suspended For Disarming School Bus Gunman

With a nationwide effort now underway to disarm America’s gun owners because of the dangers firearms purportedly pose to the general public, namely our schoolchildren, the following report from Cypress Lake, Florida highlights how our government sponsored systems of justice have devolved into outright madness.

Consider what you’d do if you, a family or friend were under imminent threat of losing your life. Though there are those who believe that self defense is never an option, the majority of Americans – even some of the staunchest proponents of gun control – would agree that fighting back is sometimes the only option.

A 16-year old high school wrestler did exactly that when a gun wielding teen on his school bus threatened to kill another student at point blank range.

The wrestler took the drastic and last ditch measure of attacking the gun man, grappling with him, and subsequently disarming him.

What happened next only makes sense in a world where insanity is the new normal.

A 16-year-old Cypress Lake High School student, who wrestled a loaded revolver away from a teen threatening to shoot, is being punished.

The student grappled the gun away from the 15-year-old suspect on the bus ride home Tuesday after witnesses say he aimed the weapon point blank at another student and threatened to shoot him.

The student says he wrestled the .22 caliber RG-14 Revolver away from the suspect, a football player, who witnesses say threatened to shoot a teammate because he had been arguing with his friend.

“No doubt,” the student said, “he was going to shoot him point blank.”

The teen we spoke to and authorities both confirm the Revolver was loaded.

According to the arrest report the suspect, who Fox 4 is not naming because he is a minor, was “pointing the gun directly” at another student and “threatening to shoot him.”

That’s when the student we spoke with says he and others tackled the teen and wrestled away the gun.

The next day the school slapped him with a three day suspension.

According to the referral, he was suspended for being part of an “incident” where a weapon was present and given an “emergency suspension.”

“Those kids had to fight for their lives,” she said. “All the kids that was involved in this they should have a pat on their backs because they did the right thing to save someone from burying their child.”

Source: Fox 4 via The Daily Sheeple

When seconds counts, unarmed school administrators and teachers are minutes away:

This is akin to someone breaking into your home and threatening to kill your family while brandishing a weapon. The course of action that any sane person would take in such a situation would be to respond with deadly force and eliminate the threat. But what if after saving your life or those closest to you, you were prosecuted and imprisoned as an accessory to  attempted murder?

That’s essentially what happened to the teens involved in disarming this gunman.

What happened to these high school students demonstrates the absolutely asinine system of rules that exist in America.

We could be mourning the deaths of numerous students today, but rather, these kids took their lives into their own hands.

They acted quickly and decisively to disarm a gun wielding maniac.

Their reward for saving countless lives was punishment.

What is the message we’re sending to kids in situations like this, or when they are being bullied and they have no choice but to respond with equal force? We’re telling them that protecting themselves is not justified – in any situation.

We’re teaching them that they should go ahead and let a gunman shoot them, or a bully beat them down, because zero tolerance policies matter more than common sense.

On the one hand we have school administrators, unions and politicians arguing that the gun violence must stop. When the eradication of the threat, however, comes from the actions of an individual as opposed to a benevolent government entity, those on the right side of the law are treated like criminals.
