The Supreme Court has ruled that the state of Virginia can legally block out-of-state people from using its Freedom of Information Act requests to obtain state documents.
The court unanimously upheld a federal appeals court decision validating Virginia’s limitation of its FOIA law to state citizens and some media outlets, and refused two men who attempted to use the FOAI law because they are not Virginia citizens.
The men from California and Rhode Island have stated that the decision is unconstitutional.
Justice Samuel Alito, who was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals by President George H. W. Bush in 1990 and then nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court by George W. Bush in 2005, denied the accusation.
Ironically, Alito taught civil liberties courses between 1999 and 2004.
