Iran says it can fully meet its need for nuclear power plants through cooperation with foreign companies while employing Iranian experts to complete and equip the facilities.
Å“By signing contracts with major constructors of nuclear power plants and creating the potential for manufacturing equipment and completing power plants among domestic specialists, Iran will meet its need for nuclear power plants,” head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Fereydoun Abbasi said on Thursday.
Speaking at the International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Abbasi added that Iran plans to increase its nuclear power output to 20,000 megawatts in the future.
Referring to the operations of Iranâ„¢s Russian-built Bushehr nuclear power plant, the official noted that Iranian scientists are designing and taking preliminary steps to build high- and medium-power nuclear power stations.
Abbasi stressed Tehranâ„¢s commitment to observing safety standards in the construction of nuclear facilities as one of the basic and unchangeable principles followed by the Islamic Republic in this regard.
Abbasi stated that all nations must be provided with safe nuclear technology as an essential source of clean energy.
Abbasi said there are necessary international bodies which monitor observance of nuclear standards by countries, adding, Å“Future accidents can be prevented while protecting the trade interests of companies with different nationalities, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) should play its pivotal role in this regard more than before.”
Heading a high-ranking Iranian delegation, Abbasi arrived in Saint Petersburg on Monday to attend the International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century, which opened on June 27 and will wrap up on June 29.
The meeting is organized by the IAEA in cooperation with the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Russian President Vladimir Putin opened the conference. The head of the IAEA, Yukiya Amano, and the General Director of Russia’s Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, Sergey Kiriyenk, also addressed the opening ceremony.
