US Rep. Trey Radel, R-Fla., pleaded guilty Wednesday in a District of Columbia court to a misdemeanor charge of cocaine possession, officials say.
The freshman congressman was sentenced to one year probation by Superior Court Judge Robert S. Tignor, The Washington Post reported.
Radel was indicted Tuesday on a charge he “unlawfully, knowingly and intentionally possessed” cocaine he purchased from an undercover agent at a Washington restaurant Oct. 29.
Authorities said Radel and a friend bought 3.5 grams of cocaine for $250 while they sat in the agent’s car. When the transaction was completed, agents stormed the car and Radel dropped the drugs. Officers found a vial of cocaine when they searched his apartment.
Radel told the judge he was seeking counseling. If he violates his probation, Radel will have to serve 180 days in jail.
He also had to pay a $250 fine.
Radel, 37, was elected to Congress last November with 63 percent of the vote in the 19th Congressional district in southwest Florida. UPI
