More hospitals could be involved in inquiries into sexual abuse by former TV host Jimmy Savile on National Health Service (NHS) premises, British Health Secretary has announced.
In a statement to the UK Parliament on Monday, Jeremy Hunt said further “relevant information” has emerged regarding the presenter’s activities beyond the NHS institutions already being examined and with a “reference to other hospitals”.
Following the abuse revelations last year, investigations were launched into Savile’s sex offences across 13 hospital trusts, including Broadmoor, Stoke Mandeville and Leeds General Infirmary.
œAlthough all 13 investigations are currently on track, this additional material means that the timetable [for the completion of reports of the current inquiries] will be affected,” Hunt said.
He also added that findings of the investigations into Savile’s abuse on NHS premises are expected to be finished by June 2014.
Earlier in January, in a 37-page report by the police and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), Savile was branded as one of the UK™s most prolific known sexual predators who used his celebrity status to œhide in plain sight.”
According to the report titled œGiving Victims a Voice,” some 214 crimes, including 34 of rape or penetration during 54 years of abuse committed by the presenter, were recorded across 28 police force areas.
