As protests continue in the US against government mass spying programs, a political commentator says none of the two major parties care about ordinary people in the country.
Å“Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans are responding to demands of the people,” New York-based Caleb Maupin of International Action Center said on Monday.
Å“Millions and millions of people, an overwhelming majority of people, in this country are outraged” by revelations of National Security Agencyâ„¢s surveillance programs but Democrats and Republicans are not accountable to them,” Maupin told Press TV.
Å“They are rather accountable to the wealthy, billionaires, Israel.”
American people held rallies across the United States on Sunday to protest the recently revealed spying programs run by the NSA. It was the second national day of protest by privacy campaigners against the super spy agency.
Similar demonstrations were held on July 4 following the June revelations by American whistleblower Edward Snowden.
Snowden disclosed to the news media top secret documents he had obtained while working as a NSA contractor, which showed the agency is carrying out massive surveillance on both American citizens and other nationals via phone and the Internet.
On Sunday, protestors took to the streets in San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Washington, St. Louis, Raleigh and other cities calling for a halt in the governmentâ„¢s spying schemes.
Demonstrators drew attention to the NSAâ„¢s Å“unconstitutional surveillance program” and called on the government to protect the principles of the Fourth Amendment of the US Constitution.
The front page of Mondayâ„¢s New York Times stated that opposition to the NSAâ„¢s surveillance has Å“momentum that even critics say may be unstoppable.”
