The United States is making a Å“last-ditch effort” to prop up the foreign-backed militant groups in Syria which are fighting to remove President Bashar al-Assad from power, an analyst tells Press TV.
Å“[The US] is using terrorist organizations that are within the orbit of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other allies in the region in order to leverage the political situation inside of Syria and ultimately lead to the outcome that the United States and Western powers want,” Eric Draitser, founder of Stop Imperialism, said on Wednesday.
Å“That is either full-blown regime change or controlled chaos within the country,” he added.
US Secretary of State John Kerry announced on Tuesday that a meeting between American officials and al-Qaeda-linked Å“Islamic Front” fighting against the Syrian government is possible.
“The United States has not met yet to date with the Islamic Front. There has not been a discussion,” Kerry said. “It’s possible that it could take place,” he added.
French media have revealed that the United States is second in line to lead al-Qaeda forces in Syria after Saudi Arabia.
Å“What we are looking at is an international criminal operation that is organized and led by the United States,” Draitser noted.
As the Syrian army makes more advances against militant groups, Draitser said, Å“what we are seeing from Kerry and the United States is a last ditch effort at propping up the opposition.”
