The Republican leadership’s plan for smooth passage of a tax cut after a pair of deficit hawks who have had highly public spats with President Trump demanded changes.
Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee – who Trump has mocked as a ‘lightweight’ and wrote ‘couldn’t get elected dog catcher’ – is demanding changes to the bill party leaders consider make-or-brake for Republicans.
Corker had sought a ‘trigger’ that would rein in tax cuts if optimistic economic growth projections don’t pan out.
The push grew more urgent when the nonpartisan Joint Tax Committee determined that even using ‘dynamic’ scoring that takes account for accelerated growth from tax cuts, the bill would add at trillion to the ballooning $20 trillion deficit.
