Prehistoric rock carvings discovered in India’s western state of Maharashtra could be evidence of a previously unknown civilization that lived tens of thousands of years ago.
Archaeologists found the carvings, or petroglyphs, mostly hidden beneath the soil across 52 villages in the region, the BBC reports.
The experts suspect the carvings were created by a hunter-gatherer community, as the images are filled with drawings of animals. But, in a baffling discovery, the team found that the ancient artwork depicts some animals that are not native to the region.
The find suggests the long-ago civilization could have migrated to India from Africa, where many of the animals in question can be found – or, that large mammals once roamed between the continents to cover a much wider breadth than previously thought.
