A new official report on the rise of “black extremists” by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation is rousing fears of a return to racist measures used by the agency during the civil rights movement, when it spied on activist groups without evidence of illegal conduct.
The 12-page report released in August states that “black identity extremists” are increasingly targeting law enforcement after persistent police killings of African American men, especially since the shooting of Michael Brown stirred unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, in 2014, AP reported Saturday.
It further points to cases, in which “extremists” had “acted in retaliation for perceived past police brutality incidents,” warning that such violence was likely to continue.
African American leaders and activists expressed outrage over the report after its was revealed by the US-based Foreign Policy journal last month.
