PressTV-Ex-Scottish leader quits over sex harassment claims

Former Scottish National Party leader Alex Salmond has been forced to quit the party amid allegations of sexual harassment against him.

Salmond announced his resignation on Wednesday, vowing he would clear his name from the harassment accusations leveled at him by two women

Salmond, 63, said in a long Twitter post that he chose to resign to lessen divisions within the party after the allegations drew both condemnation and support from both critics and allies.

The SNP, the largest political party in Scotland, holds the most seats in the Scottish parliament. The party gained significant public support in recent years after spearheading the campaign for Scottish independence from the UK during the 2014 referendum.

Current SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said of her ‘huge sadness’ at Salmond’s resignation, although she insisted the allegations should be investigated.
