Spain is experiencing a huge surge in migrants using it as an entry point to get into Europe.
Over 8,200 migrants have landed on Spanish shores this year so far, more than triple the number that arrived in the same period last year and more than the total number of people who arrived in 2016.
Last week, stunned holidaymakers watched on as a boat load of migrants stormed the beech they were relaxing on, in broad daylight, before running ashore to start their new lives in Europe.
It is believed the route is becoming more and more popular because of the EU’s deal with Turkey, which allows migrants to be processed in Greece and sent back to Turkey. The deal has seen the number of people entering Europe via Greece drop from 156,267 in the first 5 months of last year, to just 7,043 in the same period this year.
Migrants are also using a land route to get to Spanish territory, ‘thousands’ of migrants have tried their luck over the last few weeks, using sticks, stones and other makeshift weapons to breach Ceuta’s border with Morocco – the EU’s only land border with Africa.
Westmonster wonders if Spain will now become more vocal in stopping the boats and insisting migrants be processed at camps in North Africa, given their heavy reliance on tourism, especially in the south…
