All eyes turned to Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg for the last quarter final game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Spain and Paraguay both energized and buoyed by the earlier elimination of favorites Brazil and Argentina faced off in a dramatic tie that had plenty of talking points as well as action.
The contest saw 3 penalty kicks taken but no goals scored as Oscar Cardozo and Xabi Alonso missed penalty kicks in regulation time for Paraguay and Spain respectively. However, with just 10 minutes left on the clock, David Villa broke the deadlock and scored a goal that eventually was enough to see Spain through to the Semi Finals of this year’s World Cup in South Africa. Spain will now face Germany in the semi final while Netherlands will face Uruguay in the other semi final. The semi final will now have three European teams and a South American team among whom the winner of the 2010 FIFA World Cup will emerge.
