US Syria strike ‘a war of aggression’

An American antiwar activist says if the United States launches strikes on Syria it would be a Å“war of aggression” as the Obama administration is trying to win domestic and international support for military action against the Arab country.

Å“If the US now goes to war against Syria, it would be a war of aggression,” said Richard Becker, a regional coordinator of the ANSWER Coalition, a US-based protest umbrella group consisting of many antiwar and civil rights organizations.

An American assault on Syria would be the Å“most serious form of international crime, the most serious form of war crime,” Becker told Press TV on Thursday.

The Obama administrationâ„¢s move towards a new war with Syria is Å“not based on humanitarian concerns, but in order to further its aims, which are domination of this strategic region,” he said.

Becker added the Middle East is a strategic region Å“because of its great oil resources and it strategic position as a crossroads between Asia, Africa and Europe.”

Å“We in the ANSWER Coalition are actively opposing this war. We have had numerous protests all over the country along with many other organizations, and weâ„¢ll be continuing these efforts to stop a war against Syria before it starts.”

President Obama and some members in Congress want to attack Syria over recent accusations that the country used chemical weapons against militants, an allegation strongly rejected by the Syrian government.

The president and his allies on Capitol Hill are facing strong opposition from a growing number of Congress members who are not yet convinced that it’s in the US interest to launch missiles at Syria.
