New revelations about the National Security Agencyâ„¢s spying on Israeli top officials will help pro-Israeli elements in the US to put pressure on President Barack Obama, an analyst says.
Documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden last week showed that the NSA along with British intelligence agency GCHQ targeted email addresses belonging to the offices of former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and minister for military affairs, Ehud Barak, between 2008 and 2011.
Å“It gives a lot of ammunition to pro-(Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin) Netanyahu and pro-Likud elements in the United States to put pressure on Obama,” at a time when the administration is trying Å“to broker a peace deal” between Israel and Palestine, American author Mark Glenn told Press TV on Sunday.
Å“I find this particularly interesting given that at this time [Secretary of State] John Kerry of course is trying to broker Ëœa peace dealâ„¢ between Israel and the Palestinians, Ëœa peace dealâ„¢ that Benyamin Netanyahu and his party are completely unwilling to implement,” Glenn said.
Å“What you have a here is a case where certain elements within the Obama administration and of course Benyamin Netanyahu and his party are at odds with each other,” he added.
The analyst said it was likely that pro-Israeli elements in the US government and media have had Å“this information for a time but it would be better utilized such as now.”
Å“It is a timed-release,” Glenn said. Å“It is being done in a coordinated fashion to put political pressure on Obama.”
