‘US not neutral player in Syria crisis’

A political analyst told Press TV that Washingtonâ„¢s direct and continuous intervention in internal affairs of Syria depicts that Å“the US is not a neutral player” in its proxy war.

Å“The US is not a neutral player at all. The aim of the Obama administration and of the Pentagon is to bring about regime change in Syria – they make no bones about this actually,” ANSWER coalitionâ„¢s Richard Becker.

He went on to say that Å“the idea that they are in any way neutral is completely false and in fact probably a great deal more, which will be revealed in the future, has been going on by way of US intervention.”

The comments came after Los Angeles Times reported on June 21 that the CIA and US special operations troops have been secretly providing foreign-backed militants with training on the use of anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons since the opening of a new US military base in southwest of Jordan in November 2012.

The US has over 1,000 troops stationed in Jordan, up from 250, near the border with Syria for months. Training the foreign-backed militants has been carried out in Turkey, as well.

Becker also highlighted the level of foreign intervention, saying the war on Syria is Å“Really a war by imperialism, by the US, the British and French who used to rule this area, who colonized it; and the regimes that are loyal to them and who they have kept in place for so many years.”

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has repeatedly accused the West and its regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey of fueling the violence which began in the country in March 2011.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama earlier ordered the CIA to directly provide the militants in Syria with weapons, citing the use of chemical arms by the Syrian government. Damascus has rejected the allegation.

On June 22, foreign ministers of the countries supporting the militants fighting the Syrian government, including Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and the United States, agreed to provide the insurgents with weapons.

Many people, including large numbers of soldiers and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
