North Korea has censured the United States for its role in escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula, urging Washington to end its Å“arms build-up.”
Å“The US can never cover up its true colors as the chief culprit escalating the tensions on the peninsula in a planned and deliberate way,” North Korea’s ruling party daily Rodong Sinmun said in a Sunday commentary.
The newspaper further said Washington must take Å“real actions to stop arms build-up and war rackets of threatening and blackmailing the other party, not just uttering words,” if it seeks real peace and security in the region.
The commentary came after North Korea’s UN ambassador Sin Son Ho demanded the dissolution of the United Nations Command in South Korea, accusing the US of building an Asian version of NATO to realize President Barack Obama’s pivot to Asia.
Å“The most pressing issue in northeast Asia today is the hostile relations between the DPRK (North Korea) and the US which can lead to another war at any moment,” Sin said on June 21.
The ambassador said that the deteriorating situation on the Korean Peninsula Å“is not caused by the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea),” adding, Å“All deteriorations and intensified situations (are) entirely caused by the United States of America.”
The envoy further said his country would never give up its Å“self-defense war deterrent.” However, he reiterated Pyongyangâ„¢s offer to have senior-level talks with Washington.
The Korean Peninsula has been locked in a cycle of military rhetoric over the past few months.
The rhetoric escalated when the United States and South Korea held joint military exercises in April, with the participation of US nuclear-capable B-52 and B-2 stealth bombers. North Korea censured the drills and warned Washington and Seoul against a Å“preemptive attack,” which could develop into an Å“all-out war.”
