UK Tory MPs warn govt. over army cuts

A group of British Conservative MPs have warned against the government™s plans to axe a fifth of the army™s full-time soldiers and replace them with reservists.

In a letter to British Prime Minister David Cameron and Defence Secretary Philip Hammond, the group, led by former army officer John Baron, described the government™s proposals as being driven by “financial necessity and not strategic design”, The Telegraph reported.

The Tory MPs urged the officials to halt plans to cut the size of the regular army by 20,000 “at the very least” until they œare sure that the army reserve plans will work”.

The British government™s plans include cutting the regular army from 102,000 to 82,000 and increasing the number of reservists from 15,000 to 30,000 by 2018.

Earlier in August, the Chief of the Defence Staff General Sir Nick Houghton said the Tory-led government™s proposals to cut military jobs and budgets have left some personnel feeling œcynical and detached”.
