UK suffered severe gas supply squeeze

It has been revealed that Britain was just six hours away from running out of its gas supply in March.

A new report has revealed that Britain was just six hours away from running out of its gas supply during an energy crisis in March, raising fears that Britain is too dependent on imported energy.

The report shows when warnings were issues that Britain was only two days away from running out of stored gas, the Crown Estate, which manages the British Queenâ„¢s property portfolio including huge gas caverns underground, had warned that the nation was even closer to a supply disturbance.

The Crown Estate said that a high demand of gas during an added month of cold weather, combined with a fault to a pipeline, caused stores of gas to become Å“dangerously low”.

But the National Grid, which pipes gas around the country, tried to whitewash its previous move claiming that Britain had “substantial resilience” and various supply sources including imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

This is while, energy and infrastructure director at the Crown Estate Rob Hastings said the nation Å“really only had six hours” worth of stored gas.

“The bottom line is that in the UK we are in a place where the gas supply is dangerously low,” Hastings added.

The gas supply failure will fuel fears over the country’s increasing reliance on energy imports amid domestic production plunge while raising concerns about soaring energy bills.
