British Prime Minister David Cameron has called for an immediate investigation into reports that an undercover police officer was part of a deliberate smear campaign against the family of a murdered black teenager.
The officer, Peter Francis, told the Guardian that his commanders told him to “hunt for disinformation” that could help undermine efforts by the family and friends of Stephen Lawrence to persuade officials to lead a better public inquiry into his murder.
Å“The family liaison officer, who was in the Stephen Lawrence house, was taking all the details of all the family members who were there, all the visitors who actually gave their details,” Francis said.
Å“We were asked to comment on these individuals, whether or not in their words they were politicos or what/who they were,” he added.
Later, Cameron said his remarks were “absolutely dreadful allegations” saying a probe is possible.
Lawrence was stabbed to death in 1993 and an inquiry six years later found the Metropolitan Police “institutionally racist” in its response to the killing.
Lawrenceâ„¢s murderers were only put to justice last year, almost 20 years after committing the crime.
They were formerly acquitted of Lawrenceâ„¢s murder back in 1996.
