UK organizing UNSC meeting on Syria

The UK government has launched an initiative for the UN Security Council to informally discuss future of Syria with the heads of the countryâ„¢s so-called opposition group.

Britainâ„¢s ambassador to the UN Mark Lyall Grant is organizing the informal meeting of the UN Security Council on Friday so members can exchange views with Syriaâ„¢s Western-backed main opposition group.

Mark Lyall Grant said Tuesday that the delegation from the Syrian National Coalition will be led by Ahmed Al Jarba, president of the Western-backed umbrella group.

Lyall Grant said the meeting will provide a forum for council members to have Å“a frank and informal exchange” with the National Coalition on a number of issues involved in ending the violence in Syria.

Diplomats said the delegation is expected to visit Paris and London before coming to New York.

The Syrian National Coalition is comprised of various Western-backed minority groups who have teamed up with al-Qaeda affiliated al-Nusra Front and took arms against the popular government of President Bashar al-Assad.

The alliance aims to topple the government of President Assad through foreign-backed military force, something that the Syrian people vehemently oppose.

The more than two years insurgency has resulted in the death of tens of security forces and ordinary citizens who have fallen victims to terrorist-led attacks inside Syria.
