A British parliamentary group has criticized the scaremongering regarding Romanian and Bulgarian migrants to UK saying their number would be far fewer than anti-migration lobbying groups tend to announce.
According to cross-party group Migration Matters Trust, a maximum 20,000 Romanians and Bulgarians will migrate to Britain by 2014 that is well below the hundreds of thousands claimed by anti-immigration activists.
Migration Matters director Atul Hatwal said their estimate is based on EU migration records and economic factors including recession and slow job market in Britian.
“Our belief is that the anti-immigration lobby have cried wolf once too often,” Hatwal said.
“Their claim is that as many as 300,000 new migrants will arrive from Romania and Bulgaria over the course of 2014. In truth we believe that figure will probably peak at around 20,000,” he added.
Anti-immigration groups such as Migration Watch have been raising alarm about an influx of Romanian and Bulgarian people coming to Britain after border controls are lifted at the beginning of 2014.
Migration Matters said even the government is a party to scaremongering with its announcement that an estimated 37,000 extra Romanian and Bulgarian workers have entered Britain since June 2012.
