UK MP quits over sexual assault case

A British Liberal Democrat MP facing sexual assault allegations has stepped down from the party whip after meeting deputy Prime Minister and party leader Nick Clegg.

Mike Hancock is accused of misusing her position to take advantage of a vulnerable woman who approached him for help with her noisy neighbors.

His voluntary withdrawal followed a move by Clegg to suspend him from the party whip.

Hancockâ„¢s 39-year-old victim has sued him in the high court after repeated requests from the Lib Dem party officials to investigate his misdemeanor failed.

“My client has fought for three years to get someone in authority to take her allegations seriously. Repeatedly her complaints have been met with indifference,” the victimâ„¢s solicitor, Harriet Wistrich, said.

“The abuse of Mike Hancock’s power and status as an MP is a matter that should concern all politicians with an interest in challenging the sleaze that taints the reputation of parliament,” Wistrich added.

Hancock was arrested over the accusations in 2010 but was later released.

His lawyers claimed at the time that the case was dismissed by the Crown Prosecution Service because there was no evidence against him.
