UK FM to discuss Syria in Paris

Britain™s Foreign Secretary William Hague will meet his US and French counterparts this week to discuss Syria crisis, according to the Foreign Office.

Hague will meet US Secretary of State John Kerry and French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius on Monday, September 16 after he signaled support for a Russian proposal designed to put Syrian chemical weapons under control.

Speaking at the House of Commons on Thursday, Hague said Moscow™s initiative has to be taken œseriously” and its œsincerity”.

British Prime Minister David Cameron also said the plan, which has been welcomed by Syria, was an idea “definitely worth exploring”.

The UK premier said he entered the process with a “hard head and cool calculations”.

Kerry and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met in Geneva on Thursday to discuss the Russian proposal, according to which Damascus must submit a comprehensive list of its chemical weapons.

According to reports, after a third day of talks in Geneva, Washington and Moscow reached an agreement on a framework for Syria to verify it is eliminating all its chemical weapons.

Under the agreement, the government of President Bashar al-Assad must destroy its stockpile of chemical weapons by mid-2014.

The Syrian ambassador to the UN said earlier on Thursday that his country became a full member of the international treaty prohibiting the use of chemical weapons.

US President Barack Obama, however, has said the US will keep the threat of military force on the table.
