UK anti-war activists continue push

Leading British anti-war group the Stop the War Coalition has called for continued campaigns to œkeep up the pressure against an attack on Syria”.

Stop the War founding member Chris Nineham said the group is organizing the œbiggest possible” anti-war contingent in the Trades Union Congress™s mass demonstration to defend the National Health Service (NHS) in Manchester on September 29.

Nineham also called for locally-organized public meetings across Britain by opponents of a strike on Syria, in cooperation with the Stop the War or separately, to show the depth of opposition to a military adventurism.

He added US President Barack Obama was forced to shelve plans for an immediate attack on Syria under huge public pressure and for fear of humiliation in case of a no vote to the attack in the US Congress.

Nineham said the fear struck Obama after British MPs humiliated Prime Minister David Cameron by rejecting his plans for a military action against Syria, and that came thanks to public protests.

œWhatever their rhetoric, it is clear to the world that Cameron’s plans were blocked because of public opinion and Obama blinked because of potential defeat in Congress,” Nineham said.

œBut the threat of an attack remains. Obama and [US Secretry of State John] Kerry are still talking about regime change and the US announced for the first time last week it was openly arming the rebels. Negotiations with Russia and Syria can break down at any time,” he further warned.

The Stop the War has been part of the campaign against an attack on Syria since the US and its allies intensified their drumbeat of war based on claims of a chemical attack in the Middle Eastern country on August 21.

The group is holding an emergency public meeting named œNo War on Syria” in London today and another public meeting titled œStop the attack on Syria – No more western interventions” in Lewisham on Thursday.
