At least eight people, including a police officer, have lost their lives in the Philippines after Typhoon Nari battered the northern parts of the country.
The typhoon hit the Asian country early on Saturday, leaving over two million people without electricity and damaging many buildings.
“The wind picked up very quickly, very dramatically. We had the wind coming right off the ocean for four hours, very strong, typhoon-force winds,” AFP quoted a freelance journalist as saying.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, an officer awaiting deployment to rescue victims was killed by the typhoon.
Other victims of the typhoon are a person in Candaba town, three people in Nueva Ecija province, and two children and an elderly person in the province of Bulacan.
The Philippines gets about 20 major storms or typhoons each year that hit mainly during the rainy season between June and October.
In September, deadly landslides triggered by torrential monsoon rains killed 20 people in northwestern Philippines.
In December 2012, Typhoon Bopha left at least 902 people dead mostly on the southern island of Mindanao.Bopha was the 16th storm that has struck the country in the year.
In 2011, Typhoon Washi killed more than 1,500 people in the southern Philippines.
