Turkeyâ„¢s deputy prime minister has criticized US Secretary of State John Kerry for saying that Egypt’s military was “restoring democracy” when it ousted elected president, Mohamed Morsi, last month.
“Has the military built democracy in the US or European countries? Coups won’t bring democracy; in fact they will kill and destroy the democratic paths. Just like it did in Egypt,” Bekir Bozdag wrote on his Twitter page on Friday.
Bozdag’s remarks came a day after Kerry said the Egyptian military was asked by millions and millions of people to intervene and remove Morsi.
“And the military did not take over, to the best of our judgment – so far. To run the country, there’s a civilian government. In effect, they were restoring democracy,” Kerry said in an interview with Pakistan television.
The Obama administration has refused to describe Morsi’s removal as a “coup.”
Egyptâ„¢s Muslim Brotherhood has also criticized Kerry’s remarks, which are seen as supportive of the interim government.
“Is it the job of the army to restore democracy? Does Secretary Kerry accept Defense Secretary (Chuck) Hagel to step in and remove (US President Barack) Obama if large protests take place in America?” Gehad al-Haddad, a spokesman for Muslim Brotherhood, asked in a statement on Friday.
Morsi was removed by the military on July 3 after just one year in office. His supporters have been staging protest sit-ins, demanding his reinstatement since then despite deadly clashes with security forces.
