Tripoli clashes leave six people dead

Lebanese army troops in armored personnel carriers patrol the area along the demarcation line between Tripoli’s Sunni Muslim Bab al-Tabbneh district and the mainly Alawite Jabal Mohsen neighborhood on May 21, 2013.

Death toll from three days of clashes in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli over the crisis in neighboring Syria has reached six.

According to Lebanese sources, one person was killed and five others injured in renewed clashes between residents of rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen on Tuesday.

At least two people were killed and many others injured in a gun battle in the same area on Sunday. Two Lebanese soldiers were also killed next day when the army entered the flashpoint area to break up the clashes.

Tripoli has been the scene of fierce clashes between the supporters and opponents of the Syrian government since the beginning of the unrest in Syria more than two years ago.

While Bab al-Tebbaneh residents support militants fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the inhabitants of neighboring Jabal Mohsen are loyal to Assad.
