Top army officers killed in NW Pakistan

Pakistani troops patrol a town in the country’s northwest.

Two senior military officers and a soldier have been killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in Pakistan’s troubled northwest tribal region, military sources say.

The causalities come after their military vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in the Upper Dir district of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province on Sunday

“Maj Gen Sanaullah and Lt Col Touseef embraced Shahadat (martyrdom) this morning. They were returning after visiting troops posts on Pak- Afghan Border,” the military said in a statement.

The statement added that at least one soldier was also killed and two others sustained injuries as a result of the powerful explosion.

The sources added that those injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

No group has yet claimed responsibility, but pro- Taliban militants usually take the blame for similar attacks in the violence-wracked country.

Local officials said the bomb was planted by pro- Taliban militants on the roadside to hit the Pakistani military convoy in the troubled region.

Pro-Taliban militants have carried out numerous attacks against security forces as well as civilians and managed to spread their influence in various regions despite frequent offensives by the Pakistani army.

The deadly attack comes at a time when the South Asian country is grappling with growing wave of violence and militancy.

Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Pakistan entered an alliance with the US in the so-called war on terror.
