Tighter visa rules cost UK billions

British government’s restrictions on foreign student visa could cost Britain’s universities billions in a decade.

British government’s restrictions on foreign student visa could cost Britain’s universities £2.4 billion over the next decade, a study has revealed.

According to a research by Universities UK, tougher student visa rules could force more overseas students to choose the US and Canada to continue their studies, taking £350 million a year in lost revenue with them.

“This could put the UK’s strong position within the global education market at risk and lead to a reduction in exports to the value of £2.4bn across the entire [UK] education sector between 2012-13 and 2024-25,” said the report.

British governmentâ„¢s restrictions on visa rules have led to a decrease in the number of foreign students in the UK. The big plunge comes after British ministers introduced new rules in 2011.

The rules prevent foreign students to stay in the country after graduation unless they get a job with a salary above £20,000.
