Syria praised for protecting Christians

US Sen. Rand Paul

US Senator Rand Paul has praised Syrian President Bashar al-Assadâ„¢s government for protecting Christians against foreign-backed militants in Syria.

Speaking on NBCâ„¢s Meet The Press on Sunday, Paul said the Syrian government Å“has protected Christians for a number of decades” while the US-backed militants Å“have been attacking” them.

Last month, eleven people, mostly Christians were put to death by gun in central Syria by the militants.

Christians make up 10 percent of Syriaâ„¢s population and have been in fear ever since militants started fighting government forces in 2011. Syriaâ„¢s Christians worry of being marginalized and prosecuted if Assad is overthrown.

Paul also warned that a possible US intervention in Syria would damage Washingtonâ„¢s regional allies, Jordan and Israel.

He said he would like to ask US Secretary of State John Kerry, Å“Do you think if it’s more likely or less likely that we’ll have less refugees in Jordan or if Israel will suffer an attack” if the US decided to strike Syrian military targets.

Kerry claimed on Sunday that tests showed sarin gas was used in a deadly chemical attack near the Syrian capital Damascus on August 21 implicating the Syrian government in the attack.

Syrian authorities strongly rejected the US claim, and Russian President Vadimir Putin described it as Å“utter nonsense.”

In America, the majority of people do not support military action against Syria, according to polls.
