A student has been shot and killed in the US state of New York after an armed man broke into her home during an apparent attempted robbery.
The incident happened in Long Island on early Friday when the gunman forced his way into the home that the 21-year-old victim, Andrea Rebello, shared with her twin sister and another young woman.
According to the police, the man who was wearing a mask, knocked on the door of the home and when one of the residents looked to see who was there, he burst in.
Police said that a man was also at the house at the time of the incident. The unidentified suspect held the twin sisters and the young man hostage, but allowed the other woman to leave the house, apparently to withdraw cash from a bank machine.
The woman then called the police and informed them of the hostage taking at her home. The police rushed to the scene.
Å“Shortly after our arrival, a shooting took place where the suspect is killed and one of the female victims are killed,” said Deputy Inspector Kenneth Lack of the Nassau County Police Department.
The police said an investigation has been launched into the details of shooting. However, it appeared that the gunman and the police exchanged gunfire.
Å“We are doing a forensic analysis,” said the Nassau chief of detectives, John R. Capece, adding, Å“We are going to get to the bottom of what happened.”
Following the fatal incident, the victimâ„¢s father Fernando Rebello told the Journal News daily outside his home, Å“It’s my daughter, my baby daughter…I’m so confused. I don’t know what to do.”
Andrea Rebello was in her third year of university, studying public relations, Hofstra University said.
There have been several fatal shootings across the United States over the past few months, putting the issue of lax gun control laws back in the spotlight.
Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed across the United States.
The US averages 87 gun deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.
