Pakistani security forces have recovered six dead bodies from different parts of the violence-wracked southern port city of Karachi.
The bodies bearing signs of torture were recovered in Baldia, Kharadar, Lyari, and Orangi districts across the troubled city of nearly 18 million people on Monday, the daily Dawn newspaper reported.
Local security officials say the deceased were abducted and tortured before being shot dead. The bodies wrapped in gunny bags also bore gunshot wounds and torture marks.
Police officials said they have launched an investigation into the serial violent incidents.
Karachi, the capital of Sindh province and the country’s financial hub, saw its deadliest year in two decades in 2012, with around 2,000 people killed in violence linked to ethnic and political tensions.
Karachi has experienced a fresh spate of violence and targeted killings over the past few months.
Sectarian, political, and ethnic violence in Karachi has killed hundreds of people in Pakistanâ„¢s main commercial hub so far this year.
The city is home to numerous ethnic groups and has been hit by clashes between rival ethnic and political factions in the past two decades.
Since late 2009, there has been a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan and thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
Thousands of people have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when Pakistan entered an alliance with the US on the so-called war against terrorism, according to local media.
