A number of Republican lawmakers are demanding that a Libyan man abducted by US Special Forces over his alleged role on the bombings of two American embassies be sent to Guantanamo detention facility for interrogation.
Republican Senators Lindsey Graham, Kelly Ayotte and Saxby Chambliss argue that several months are needed to sufficiently question Abu Anas al-Libi about attacks he might have been involved in.
Al-Libi, also known as Nazih al-Ragya, was kidnapped by US forces in the Libyan capital of Tripoli and was transferred out of the country on October 5. He is currently being held in military custody aboard the USS San Antonio.
According to law enforcement officials, a group of US investigators from the military, intelligence agencies and the Justice Department are currently questioning him.
But Sen. Graham said, “Putting him on a Navy vessel for a matter of days or weeks is not a proper way to gather intelligence in the war on terror,” adding that “The best tool we have in intelligence gathering is time itself.”
œThe bad decision is not to put him in a permanent confinement facility that will allow long-term interrogation,” he noted.
In addition, Ayotte said, œA Navy vessel is not a substitute for a detention facility like at Guantanamo Bay, which is a top-rate detention facility.”
American political analyst Stephen Lendman believes al-Libi is being tortured on the warship in order to get a confession. œAl-Libi is being held on a US torture prison ship,” and œhe™ll be tortured. He™ll be forced to sign a confession,” he said in an interview.
Al-Libi was on the most-wanted list of the FBI. The United States had offered a five-million-dollar reward for information leading to his capture after he was indicted in 2000.
