Italian media say a school janitor in the countryâ„¢s largest island, Sicily, has killed a religious education teacher in a shooting.

The media reported on Saturday that the 69-year-old janitor known as Salvatore Lo Presti shot and killed the female teacher identified as Giovanna Nobile before trying to flee the scene.

Reports say the 54-year-old teacher went to the Pappalardo di Vittoria School in southern part of the island for a teachers’ meeting and was confronted by Lo Presti while leaving the school building.

Following the incident, the janitor, nicknamed “the poet” around the school because of his enthusiasm for writing poems, fled the scene but was nabbed by police for murder.

Another janitor working at the school, Biagio Cirica, said that Lo Presti was a calm person adding, Å“He was mad at the world, but he never did anything more than rant. I would never ever have thought he would be taken over by such rage”

He went on to say that Å“I have known him for nearly 30 years. Did he secretly hate her or did he have a weakness for her? How can we know.”
