Powerful blasts kill three in Karachi

Pakistani police gather at a bomb blast site in Karachi, June 15, 2013.

Two separate explosions have claimed the lives of at least three persons and injured several others in the southern Pakistani port city of Karachi, security sources say.

The causalities come after bomb and grenade attacks shook two busy neighborhoods of the volatile city in less than an hour on Saturday evening.

The local security officials said the attacks happened in Patel Para and Gulshan-e-Iqbal regions of the violence-wracked city.

They added that an investigation has been launched into the violent incidents.

No group or person has yet claimed responsibility for the blasts.

Karachi has experienced a fresh spate of violence and targeted killings over the past few months.

Sectarian, political and ethnic violence in Karachi has killed hundreds of people in Pakistanâ„¢s main commercial hub so far this year.

The city is home to numerous ethnic groups and has been hit by clashes between rival ethnic and political factions in the past two decades.

Meanwhile, a Pakistan’s top court has recently ordered the government law enforcement agencies to take immediate action against pro-Taliban militants in the country’s largest city.

Thousands of people have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when Pakistan entered an alliance with the US on the so-called war against terrorism, according to local media.

Since late 2009, there has been a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan and thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
