New poll results show two in three Britons want their government to take œdrastic action” to curb immigration, with negative feelings most prevalent among those unfamiliar with migrants.
The Sky News poll found that 67 percent of the British public considers the coalition government™s plans to cut immigration down to 100,000 as unsatisfactory.
Meanwhile, 52 percent said they would probably vote for a party that would œsignificantly” reduce immigration levels while 27 percent said migration has not done Britain any good over the past decade.
However, the poll also found that the anti-immigrant feeling is most strong among those who are least exposed to migrants, including those living outside urban areas and those who do not know any immigrants well.
The study found 71 percent of the respondents living in rural areas, compared to 53 of those in the urban areas, supported drastic action while 71 percent of those who do not know any immigrants backed such action compared to 58 percent among those who knew migrants well.
Census figures show England and Wales witnessed a 3.7 million population rise between 2001 and 2011, 2.1 million of them migrants.
