Perseverance Front to choose nominee

The principlist Perseverance Front is weighing up the situation to pick a nominee for the June presidential election.

The front has already declared former Health Minister Kamran Baqeri Lankarani as its preferred nominee for the presidential race.

But a last-minute decision by Iranâ„¢s chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, also a member of the same front, to sign up for the June 14 election seems to have presented the front with a serious dilemma.

Lankarani has hinted that he might drop out in favor of Jalili if the Front chooses the senior diplomat as its standard-bearer in the presidential race.

The registration for the 11th presidential election of Iran ended on Saturday with 686 individuals having signed up for the race.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election, and the Guardian Council vets the candidates for qualifications.

The Iranian Constitution stipulates that presidential candidates must be religious or political figures, be Iranian in origin, have Iranian citizenship, be resourceful, enjoy managerial skills, have no criminal record, be trustworthy and pious, and have firm belief in the fundamental principles of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the countryâ„¢s official religion.
