Passenger train derails in New York

A passenger train derailed early Sunday in New York City, with five cars from a Metro-North train sliding off the tracks.

The train derailed at 7:20 Sunday morning in the Bronx 100 feet north of Metro North’s Spuyten Duyvil station, said Aaron Donovan, a spokesman for Metro North, which is a subsidiary of New York State’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Donovan said there were reports of injuries, but no immediate confirmation. No train cars were in the water, he said.

Police initially said four cars are off the tracks and two are on their side.

According to an AP report, eyewitness photos show 8 cars of Metro-North passenger train derailed, none in water.
