Pakistanâ„¢s top civilian leadership has urged the nation and political parties to unite in order to fight the growing menace of militancy and terrorism across the violence-wracked country.
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said in a televised address on Friday that Pakistan was facing multiple challenges such as “terrorism and external aggression.”
Sharif also called on the nation “to stand united beside the armed forces” to tackle the security challenges facing the violence-hit country.
Sharif has frequently said that the ongoing militancy and violence jeopardize Å“the very survival of the country.”
In his speech on the occasion of Defense Day of Pakistan (Sept 6), President Asif Ali Zardari called for a renewed resolve in fighting militants in order to spare the country internal and external threats.
Zardari insisted that Pakistan had paid a heavy price in fighting militants to safeguard the rights of its people.
Defense Day of Pakistan is marked in memory of those who were killed in the Indo-Pakistani war of 1965.
Pakistan is grappling with growing wave of violence and militancy.
Militants have carried out numerous attacks against security forces as well as civilians and managed to spread their influence in various regions of the country, despite frequent offensives by the Pakistani army.
Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Pakistan entered an alliance with the United States in the so-called Å“war on terror.”
Thousands more have also been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy in the country.
