Pakistan accuses India of killing civilian

Tensions have once again flared up between Pakistan and India, with Islamabad now accusing Indian forces of killing a civilian with unprovoked firing along the disputed Kashmir border.

A Pakistani military official said on Monday that Indian troops opened fire in Battal, Chirikot and Satwal sectors along the de facto border known as the Line of Control. He also said Pakistani troops responded to the firing.

The incident comes as situation remains tense in Kashmir. The two sides have repeatedly accused each other of cross-border firing.

Also on Sunday, Pakistani military sources accused India of firing on border posts in Kashmir and the neighboring Punjab province.

Å“Indian Border Security Forces resorted to unprovoked firing on Pakistani Rangers posts near Pukhlian, Head Marala area, in Sialkot sector,” an unnamed senior military official said.

The fresh tensions also come after New Delhi accused Pakistan’s army of involvement in a deadly overnight ambush in Kashmir that killed five Indian soldiers last Monday.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since their independence from Britain in 1947 — two of them over Kashmir.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan by the UN-monitored Line of Control, but is claimed in full by both countries. It lies at the heart of more than 60 years of hostility between India and Pakistan.

Thousands of people have been killed in Kashmir over the past 20 years.
