'New leader of Egypt MB lives in Yemen'

The caretaker leader of Egyptâ„¢s Muslim Brotherhood, Mahmoud Ezzat, is reportedly living in Yemen under the protection of an Arab state of the Persian Gulf.

According to a report by London-based al-Arab newspaper, Mahmoud Ezzat currently settles in a luxurious house in the southwestern neighborhood of Haddah in the Yemeni capital, Sanaâ„¢a.

The newspaper says Ezzat, who is subject to an arrest warrant in Egypt, is often seen with Yemeni Muslim Brotherhood leaders in cars with diplomatic license plates. He is also reported to be in contact with MB members in Egypt via satellite phone.

Ezzat replaced Mohamed Badie as Muslim Brotherhood supreme leader after he was detained on 20 August. Ezzat was Badie’s second deputy. He holds a Yemeni birth certificate and was instrumental in the formation of Muslim Brotherhood in Yemen.

Badie, 70, is facing charges of inciting violence and murder over the deaths of eight anti-Brotherhood protesters outside the movement’s headquarters in Cairo in June.

On Tuesday, an Egyptian military court sentenced 11 members of the Muslim Brotherhood to life in prison on charges of “aggression” against the army in the port city of Suez on August 14.

The court also handed five-year jail terms to 45 other Brotherhood members.

The army-appointed government in Egypt has launched a bloody crackdown on supporters of the ousted President Mohamed Morsi and Muslim Brotherhood since August 14.

Almost 1,000 people were killed and more than 2,000 Brotherhood members were arrested in the army’s operation to clear protest camps.
