McCain hires analyst fired for PhD claim

The office of US Senator John McCain has hired controversial Syria analyst Elizabeth O™Bagy who was recently fired for fabricating her academic credentials.

O™Bagy was fired from the Institute for the Study of War in Washington, DC, earlier this month after it was discovered that she had lied about having a combined master™s/PhD from Georgetown University.

Following O™Bagy™s dismissal, several reports said she was enrolled in a PhD program. However, an investigation by ThinkProgress found, œEither O’Bagy was at one point enrolled [in] a PhD program and dropped out, or she has been lying the entire time.”

Before O™Bagy was fired from the Washington-based think-tank, McCain and US Secretary of State John Kerry cited an op-ed she had written in the Wall Street Journal to rally support from US congressmen for military strikes against Syria.

In her op-ed, O™Bagy argued that the arms Washington sends to foreign-backed militants in Syria would not fall into the hands of extremist militant groups.

McCain, who is a staunch advocate of US military strikes on Syria, has also dismissed as œnot true” a study by the Foreign Policy magazine that asserts œextremists” increasingly make up the opposition forces in the Arab country.

And now, the Republican senator from Arizona has hired O™Bagy, praising her as œa talented researcher,” Foreign Policy™s The Cable reported on Friday.

œElizabeth is a talented researcher, and I have been very impressed by her knowledge and analysis in multiple briefings over the last year,” McCain told The Cable. œI look forward to her joining my office.”
