May accused of border report ‘cover-up’

Theresa May is accused of a “cover-up” for censuring parts of a highly critical border security report.

British Home Secretary Theresa May has been accused of a “cover-up” after parts of a highly critical border security report were kept secret.

Politicians and campaigners have accused May of hiding Å“her own failings” after she used legal powers to redact fifteen sections of a report in to border checks between France and the UK.

The report by chief inspector of borders and immigration John Vine revealed that thousands of illegal immigrants attempting to sneak into the UK through France have not been fingerprinted by border staff for almost four years.

Shadow immigration minister, Chris Bryant condemned the government for not being honest with British people and asked why a report by a highly-respected independent inspector should be censured?

Å“This cover-up and the failure at our borders provide yet more dents in this Government’s much-tarnished credibility,” Bryant said.

Moreover, vice-chairman of campaigners Migration Watch UK Alp Mehmet said, “Transparency has to be the best policy, if only to show that the Home Office has nothing to hide.”

The Home Office, however, said the fifteen sections were redacted for security reasons.
