Lib-Dem MP to resign over party policies

Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather to resign over party’s immigration policies.

Senior Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather has announced she will step down at the next general election over the partyâ„¢s immigration and welfare policies.

Teather criticized her partyâ„¢s policies and said she has lost faith in Liberal Democratsâ„¢ commitment to social justice.

The Brent East MP said she had been left “catastrophically depressed” by the party leader Nick Clegg’s approach to immigration, under which immigrants will have restricted access to welfare.

Å“It was the moment of realising that my own party was just as afraid of public opinion as the Labour Party,” Teather said, adding that Å“something broke” inside her when her party backed the British governmentâ„¢s cap on welfare.

Earlier in August, Teather described the proposals to restrict access to services for immigrants as unworkable.

She also warned that the plans could have disastrous consequences for communities across the country.
