LA workers trike over poverty wages

Workers went on strike in the US state of California on Tuesday, continuing their campaign against low-wage jobs.

The protesters at Los Angeles International Airport carried signs calling on American workers to unite in their stand against employers.

They marched and rallied through America’s second largest airport, despite warnings from police to disperse.

The workers said they were tired of working long hours and making poverty wages. Their non-violent protest finished with no arrests.

Hundreds of thousands of workers in America are complaining about low income, calling for a raise in their wages.

On Thursday, fast-food and other low-wage workers walked off their jobs in about 60 US cities in the largest organized strike in the history of the industry.

The walkout followed a series of strikes across the United States which initially began last November in New York City.

Striking workers have called for better wages and the right to unionize. They say they cannot live on their current wages and want to be paid at least $15 an hour, twice the rate for many employees at fast-food chains.

The minimum wage in the US has remained unchanged since 2009 when it was set at $7.25 an hour.

Gallup’s annual August Work and Education poll shows that US workers are still worried about having their benefits and wages reduced, their hours cut back, and being laid off.
