Indian police stand near the bodies of two Indian army soldiers lying inside a police vehicle near the scene of an attack by militants in the outskirts of Srinagar on June 24, 2013.
At least three soldiers have been killed and seven others injured in an attack in the Indian-administered Kashmir region, ahead of a visit by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The soldiers came under attack on Monday after militants opened fire on their convoy on the outskirt of the Srinagar city, army spokesman Colonel Brijesh Pandey said.
“We have received 10 casualties from the attack site at the military hospital, three of them were fatal,” Pandey also said.
The attack came as authorities have imposed a high state of alert ahead of the Prime Ministerâ„¢s visit to Kashmir on Tuesday.
Security officials said police and parliamentary forces were deployed across the territory.
“A high alert is there. We do face a threat from the militants,” said Abdul Gani Mir, Kashmir’s police chief.
On Saturday, two Indian policemen were killed after militants fired shots at two constables as they were on duty at Srinagarâ„¢s Hari Singh High Street market.
Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 60 years of hostility between India and Pakistan. Both countries claim the region in full but each only has control over a section of the territory.
Over the past two decades, the conflict in Kashmir has left over 47,000 people dead by the official count, although other sources say the death toll could be as high as 90,000.
