Italian President Giorgio Napolitano has voiced Romeâ„¢s readiness to strengthen and develop cooperation with Iran in bilateral, regional and international issues.
In a meeting with Iranâ„¢s new Ambassador to Rome Jahanbakhsh Mozaffari, the Italian president expressed hope that bilateral relations would further develop.
He described Iran as an ancient and instrumental country in the Middle East region, adding Italy attaches great significance to its relations with the Islamic Republic.
Napolitano also praised high voter turnout in Iranâ„¢s June 14 presidential vote and said the great participation of Iranians in the election is a strong support for president-elect Hassan Rohani.
Rohani won Iranâ„¢s June 14 presidential election with 18,613,329 votes, or 50.7 percent of a total of 36,704,156 ballots.
Nearly 50.5 million Iranians, including more than 1.6 million first-time voters, were eligible to participate in the presidential election. The voter turnout in the election was 72.7 percent, according to the Interior Ministry.
During the meeting, the Iranian ambassador submitted his credentials to the Italian president.
Mozaffari said that the two countries enjoyed a great wealth of potentials and stressed the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation in political, international, economic, cultural and parliamentary arenas.
Pointing to historical and good Iran-Italy relations as well as the position of the two countries in the critical regions of the Middle East and Europe, Mozaffari called for closer interaction and relations between the two governments and nations. He also called for the employment of bilateral potentialities to enhance ties.
The ambassador also urged the exchange of high-ranking delegations between the two countries to further improve ties.
