Israel behind Syria explosions: Media

Israeli media say the Tel Aviv regime was behind the recent pre-dawn explosions in the Syrian port city of Latakia.

Haaretz newspaper quoted unnamed US officials as confirming to CNN that Israeli jets on July 5 bombarded a Syrian arsenal containing advanced Russian-made Yakhont anti-ship missiles.

Israeli website Ynetnews also quoted American sources as saying that Å“Israel launched the July 5 strike in order to hit the Russian-made missiles, which Israel believed pose a threat to its forces.”

Last week, Syrian opposition sources reported the presence of fighter jets in the skies of the city of Al-Haffah, east of Latakia.

No one had officially claimed responsibility for the attack. Israel has also declined to comment on the report.

Israel is already suspected of involvement in at least three airstrikes in Syria since January.

The attacks, two of which were carried out in Damascus International Airport, mostly targeted shipments of weapons.

In May, Syriaâ„¢s Foreign Ministry sent letters to the United Nations and its Security Council stating that Israelâ„¢s aggressions show the link between Tel Aviv and terrorist groups operating in Syria including the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front.

Foreign-sponsored militancy in Syria has taken its toll on the lives of many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, since March 2011.

Western powers and their regional allies including the Israeli regime, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are supporting anti-Syria militant groups, including al-Qaeda-linked terrorists, to overthrow the Syrian government.
